Errr the replacemnt Bosch BOV is leaking?????
Your going to fit a non re-circulating BOV to a non map sensored EFI system?
If that bosch valve is leaky i would be supprised! and if the supra is an auto expect to stop at sets of lights and find the engine not runing with that wank off... i meen blow off valve!
if you really wish todo the swap you will have to block off the fitting in the turbo-afm hose and get the fitting on that pipe welded your your "3000" pipe
and then cruise will the fully sik VLT owners Wooosshing regulary and un-needly

As far as I knew the Bosch BOV was the original...
I have been told by the mechanics that it is leaking. And it definitely sounds like it is as well.
The HKS BOV was recommended to be by a number of people as a good one, so I just went with their recommendations.....

And now it looks like I have no idea of how to fit it! The car is manual.

It will work, you just might get alot of exhaust poping and some stalling, especially when you come off hard throttle and clutch.
I've got a s15 BOV lying at home that i might try and use and see how it goes this weekend as my current stock bov is pssssttting all of the sudden and can no longer hit more then 9psi otherwise i loose my neck from the fc.

Hmmm. It stalls now anyway when I come back off hard throttle and clutch. So that's not going to be any different. Same with exhaust popping.

The 7M-GTE uses a mass airflow sensor which means you need a plumb-back BOV. If you get a non-plumb-back one you will regret it - the car will drive like a bag of shit.
Note that plumb-back BOV's have the advantage of being fairly quiet (usually).

They're still known to leak at higher boost levels though. You're better off getting a decent plumb-back BOV if you have a boosted 7M.
There's a bloke on PF who makes them for around $200. I have one and it's excellent.

I wouldn't ! I had fitted one to my old soarer, and a mate is on his second on his MZ20. BUT For 50 odd bucks, you cant go wrong really. Except when you crooz thru da city with an owl under de bonnet bru!
Mine never hooted, but my mates did. I had larger piping (civic top radiator hose) and we changed my mates to the same and it fixed it. Then he replaced the BOV and the hooting began again. Witht he same piping!? :/

The dude posts as Bugle on Performance Forums, so you can contact him there or if you need his email address I can dig it up when I get home (I'm at work now).
Here's a pic of what they look like. Note they're pretty big!
I ordered mine un-polished (mine is intentionally hidden so you can't even see it) which made it slightly cheaper.
A brief description from the man himself:
Quote: |
They're machined aluminium, brass piston type, adjustable using the grub screw and locknut on the top outlet's 1.25 inch OD so might need a bigger plumb back line? Or I can make it any size outlet really.. Inlet I make 1.25 inch OD if it's to be fitted to a hose, or just a flat 2 bolt round flange otherwise.

* you already have an aftermarket valve
That thing doesn't even look close to factory - and I should know, I put it there!
* the symptoms you describe sound like it may be leaking to the atmosphere
Now, think about it. If you fit a larger one that is designed to leak as much (and as loud!) as possible when you lift off, do you not think that the problems will become worse? Yes, horribly so. The car will probably run fine under light and full throttle, but on liftoff it will pop, fart, and on heavy liftoffs it will stall regularly (worse on auto than manual though).
* get another one for fifty bucks from any autobarn
Just ask for a "Bosch plastic blow off valve" and they will get you one that looks exactly like the one on the car - and it will hook straight up.
They're good to about 14psi. That one has been on the car for a few years.. what do you expect for fifty bucks?

It is not true that all externally venting BOV's will cause the car to stall when you stop etc...
If the BOV is made to vent externally (not a plumpback venting to atmosphere), then it will not stall as the valve fully seals and thus not by-passing any air after the AFM which causes the stalling.
It will however get the ECU in a bit of a twist because the AFM has measured a certain amount of air and when the BOV vents some of that to atmosphere the ECU has already calculated for it to be in the system somewhere and has provided the fuel for it also, this can cause the engine to run rich between gear changes resulting in a black puff out the exhaust, popping in the exhaust & sometimes the odd flame or two. Nothing too detremental to the engine/turbo.

flames..... cool
well the point is, we may as well stick it in till Andy gets the money for another, plumback one, if we can.
If the HKS one is a full on gay 'phhhhhh' system then it will have to go... and even more so if it causes the ECU to go nuts..
in terms of blocking off the old outlet and vacuum pipe, how is that done, just a clamp and a screw perhaps?

If you want to send money on a ricey expensive shiny bov just get a Turbosmart Type 3 plumbback.
Any vent to atmo bov is not going to work well on a AFM car.

But that's exactly what causes the engine to stall when you use an externally venting BOV!
|
AFM'd engines usually stall with leaky atmo venting BOV's because when the engine drops back to idle the valve is partially open, this means unmetered air is entering the engine which causes the engine to stall.
Most externally venting BOV's have an adjuster on top, this is used to increase the preload on the spring inside the BOV if you are having leakage/stalling issues.
This is why stock BOV's can not be vented to atmosphere.
Plumb back BOV's usually have much softer springs and are held open for longer by engine vacumn, this is why they can not be vented to atmosphere. Metal BOV's like the stock VR-4 & 7M one can be squashed in a vise to increase the spring preload and reduce leakage, but that is just plain crappy!!
