now i have a charge light that is on faintly.
i think the alternator bushings are gone.
won't charge ( much )
any ideas ?
it would appear as those these problems may encourage
me to swap in my blue top sooner.
and.
it is so cold here. that i can't even tell you how cold
it is because the reading is of the scale.

yeah it's the "V" man, or something.
Yeah possibly the alternator.
but now a new problem.
The rad over flow puked out everything, coolant everywhere.
So, i might guess that is the thermostat. ?
It was just idiling, and stuff was everywhere ( out the coolant rad overflow )
( if you can't understand me it's because i'm not aussie )
and more 4age q's
i would like a exhaust header, but need to get this thing in there for basically no money.
here's the plan
lap valves
deglaze cylinders
new (metal) head gasket ...from where ?
and i guess that's it
maybe new rings.
maybe new guides
maybe new shims
""bearings
""seals
so. can i , should i ,? ideas. suggestions.
and one more thing, i know it's stupid ,but i'm going to take the
thermo off the 4age and try it.

fixed. i think.
so what's the story?
put on custom made sway bars-
loose battery breaks from g forces-
alternator picks up slack, but can't handle it-
alternator breaks-
oh yeah, i found two more gts's at the scrap yard.
looks like a 2-3 month project to put the engine in.
2-3 months.

Note the higher output of the early 4AGE RWD engines
which unfortunately / fortunately/ unfortunately...
can't figure it out, might me nice to have to fwd config, but i like the idea of having more ponies.
( i have the black/blue rwd manifold for my fwd )
valves out, lots of build up inside intake ( leaky )
stems seem alright i guess.
lots of shit to clean up though. (casting dags)
there is crap everywhere in there.
The valves look intimidating , but they are basically normal easy to do valves. Since it would appear as though the head is not garbage, this project will continue.
so easy to fix. lap valves, deglaze cylinders, grind ports,
new oil pump ?,
but my car runs so good now. maybe a compression test is in order.

lapped valves
deglazed cylinders
cost nearly zero ( head gasket,tools )
#3 was shot, but i just did my best with it.
no new rings, i think they wanted $160+ or so ,,, too much.
i could easily do this again....except this time i have all the tools. ! it's really free this time.

any opinions on the shims. they appear very worn.
never mind.... just answered my own question.
i need to put my seat in there, minor mod there.
And i need a new dash. Mine was ripped out after my last
series of problems. Thought about a gts display pod, but nah,
i'm a aircraft cockpit kinda guy -3.5" guages are standard.
The rest will be done in mahoghany, a bit of weight, but hey.
i'll toss the pod.
hks head gasket $89 usd not bad.
oh yeah ... and the stock extractor....
jesis christ guys ... dual exhaust....
go get that header if you can... f'n sweet boyzzzzzzzz
let's see...
better intake
better exhaust
higher compression
hand lapped/loved valves
look out
___________
today
i am doing the haed, Aluminum is flying.
when they cast the haed, at the valves, there is a super
nasty ridge on all the valves.
get that out of there.
should help alot.

valves done.
the engine appears to be in remarkable condition.
ported and polished. that damn nasty-ass ridge is gone.
looks good, feels good.
i can probably get the flywheel shaved...i mean do it myself.
will need to "aquire" the various MAP sensors
and some other parts, but overall should happen.
Might happen ?
yup .
swap it out,
if not happy
then - swap back, add headers, add close ratio, etc, etc...
can't afford to look at shims this time.
i'll try to get by with old shims.
budget
engine core - 115
head gasket - 115
computer - 0
lapping compound
lapping tools
high temp paint - 10
ht silicone - 0
new oil - $50 see.. right here.. ouch... shit like this
hoses - $10
vacuume shit - $25
new bolts - dream on
( aircraft dudes like me spend plenty enough on bolts thanks! )
supra fuel pump. i'll try to "find" one
alternator-
ps pump-
starter - hopefully use the 4ac one ?
looks like about $500-600 again. i can live with that.
sure helps having all the tools already. big bonus.
__________________________
can't get over how great the engine looks.
paint is on , seat is in.
i thought the shims where gone, but they look o.k..
i'm just not sure about the engine, it looks so great, but.
the plan is, don't touch the crank.
pull piston, and deglaze without touching crank/flywheel.
this is no problem.
oh yeah... it's important to clean the rings.
and best of all. it is no longer -40 outside, so everything looks like a go.
what a great engine. $115 CAN i think... sweet.
the story is... new guys, new owners...the guy did not want to sell me the engine...
he's all "yo dude, that's like a jap Hasharocco model, i'm gonna try to get it going, it's worth mega bucks..."
ya ya ya ...eventually after a few days, i drove away with a 4age in my ae82 trunk.
and...
considering the bill sherwood oil pump treatment for my pump
but am not sure....

bump in the road #1
the bolts i ordered are the wrong ones.
I ended up coping a attitude ( very slight ) because the guy tried to tell me the engine was swapped.
MORE FUCK-HEADS
it's certainly aggrevating.
Anyways, who here knew about the head bolt length differences, i have not seen a paticular reference to that yet...
4.25 to bottom of head ....
3.5 to bottom blue top
yes mate, i know it's metric, i can only go by what the "parts guy genius " told me... he looked like a V8 boy.
...and i may hint to have this thread bumped back to conversions
i'll keep looking.

i hate being a pest but...
here's my price breakdown.
( i broke down a called Totota )
Had to explain to situation. "I drive a Chevy, man."
and so on....
talk about "coping a attitude"... i told the guy about my bolt length problems, and asked if his parts were correct.
ATTITDE
[parts guy]"This is TOYOTA, man !"
1.60 a washer x10
5.60 a bolt intake x5
( did you know that the bolts are sold intake/exhaust seperately! )
ditto exhaust x 5
4.30 x8
1.80 x8
total 137.71 ( tax in ) plus a head gasket
so looks like about 2 bills
starting to get pricey, but hey, i'll go buy a 2005 Supra instead.
...nah,,, maybe tomorrow....
p.s.
[parts guy]"That's going to be one fast Nova man."
[me]"Oh yeah, It'll be kick-ass"

before,
not my car, but looks very similar. Yes, it has a battery.
Lost ? Better you than me, because the 4ac engine gets ripped out very soon, and the 4age is almost ready to go back together.
after
not mine
Q - Seems like there are no 4age ae86 "Sprinters" in Au or Nz ?
i.e. factory stock ae86 4age equipped autos ?
This would explain why there is so much data from Au about this conversion. There is no data here about this conversion, because...
taaaa daaaaaa, there are TONNEs of these cars around, with 4age.
The 4age and tranny, lsd, etc, all is used in weekend race cars,
dirt-track sprinters.
NOBODY is their right mind would ever consider doing this conversion, - just doesn't happen here.
on schedule , on budget.
...in fact .... i've never seen a ae86 with a 4ac....
as funny as that sounds ... dudes.... confusion is KING baby.

We begin.
When I installed the clutch petal, i thought to myself, "that's a awful big hunk of steel pust to put a few pounds of pressure on a cylinder."
so, carbon fiber clutch petal. should save a couple kilo's.
And for those thinking "you can't do that, you're not a engineer !"
Well actually, i am, and i can.
the brake petal is even heavier.
I'll decide between the two, depending on supplies, I should have enough to do either or both.
Yeah., god damn pop-ups...fdff'n... just tweo maoore days ,.,..
thus iis f'n shit man ll eeeehhhhh
anyway..
yeah, just to show i'm for real - cf brake pedal.

new plans
My car will now be turned into the prototype for my carbon fiber business.
Yes.
All new carbon fiber stuff. And a 4age. And room for groceries.
~did a huge slide today, snow is melting and the pavment is poking through so i thought i'd put my foot into it. The nicest part,
absolutely no fear, i know for-a-fact that she'll come back to me.

the brake pedal is off
it is very heavy, 7-8 Lbs mabey, it feels heavy.
I picked a excellect piece to mod, it is way too beefy.
I should be able to cut the weight in half on the entire unit. EZ

brake pedal design complete.
there are two critical points, mount and cylinder pin.
they will be connected with a small steel plate - This will ensure a uber long service life. The rest will be carbon fiber.
Final weight will be around 1 Lb.
The jig should be easy to build from wood.

dash is in.
i've got a carbon fiber hood coming up soon.
looking at doing bumpers and boot also.
tach is in,,, the 4ac does not rev that high,
the 4age @ 8000 must sound so sweet.

i'm finding the efi conversion to be expensive,
so i'll likely go with dual or quad carbs
( the jap engineers cringe at this,..... but they don't live in northern canada.... i find carbs more reliable here.
you guys talk about efi driveability...
but, dudes, you can't drive with frozen injectors.
