Best budget engine conversion on KE20? Tue, 06 January 2004 06:28 Go to next message
Hey lads, I've got a KE20 coupe which is my "cheap runabout car" which has a 5K in it with a 5 speed and side draught weber on it.

It's not that fuel efficient and I am thinking of a cheap engine conversion.

I have been told that a 4AGE is the best motor to get.

Has anyone here done this conversion?

And has anyone else got any suggestions?

I am not looking for a race car, but a fuel efficient daily driver
If performance comes as a bonus (good performance for same or less fuel consumption in a more efficient motor) than I am happy but please dont anyone say dual side draught motors with racing cams etc Smiley =

Thanks

Dane

one option is to supercharge your existing 5K, you could use the orphaned SC12 (ex 4AGZE) too, would be a fantastic little performer. the only downside is the custom inlet manifolding required, but if you wanted to keep it cheap just use your weber inlet manifold and make a small plenum out of some old 3in exhaust. pick any number of throttle bodies to use (XF falcon is always a good one to use - nice and simple) and use old exhaust pipe to fabricate the piping.
with a microtech MT4 fuel only computer ($795) and an elec dizzy or MSD style ignition you could have it running VERY nicely indeed, would feel more like an NA 2.5L six to drive and be economical to boot. no rego issues either...

other than that, even the base model 16V 88kW 4AGE would be a great little engine in a body of that size, i'm sure there's heaps of info on how to get one into a KE20 if you searched.

just make sure you upgrade the brakes too.

Thanks mate

For the conversions, for the time/money and power/economy what would you recommend as the best balance between easiest and best swap?

i think the 4AGE will be about the same price as s/c-ing your 5K - that's if you do the work yourself. can you take the car off the road? if not, i would suggest the 5K route. you can play with the manifolds off and put them back on when you're done and drive it the next day.

it all depends on what you want to tackle yourself. if you don't mind doing an engine conversion and have the space/time to do it then i would go the 4AGE route - simply because if you want to upgrade it to a GZE, GTE or 20V later on, you can. they are also a nicer engine to drive with compared to the 5K. they would prob be the same as far as economy goes, with the s/c on the 5K providing a gob of torque down low which would mean your city driving would be easier.

i would hesitate to supply costs, but i would budget a good 3k to do the s/c swap (that's if nothing needs doing to your engine) and 3k for the 4AGE swap in front cut form.
remember, there a rego costs, maybe eng' costs, exhausts, tailshafts, wiring, gearboxes...
