Have you tried taking off in second gear?
Does the noise keep going if you pull the gearbox out of gear while it's making the noise?

i tried taking off in second gear and it did the exact same thing. Does that mean its the clutch? because more stress is being put on it when taking off from a stand still?

Does it make the noise when you put in the clutch at idle, but, in neutral? If so, then it's probably the clutch thrust bearing as Toby suggested, once you're moving, it's probably still making the noise, but, you're leaving the noise behind.

I've gotta admit, you've got me beat with this one...
Possibly wheel bearings? I'm stabbing in the dark here. You might want to get someone to stand outside the car while you take off slowly and see if they can pick where the noise is coming from...

Mine had a similar crunching grinding noise when the clutch was really worn. The same as you... only when taking off.
After a while the clutch was gone all together. Soon I wasn't able to change gears while the engine was running at all... unless I blipped to a sweet spot at around 3200rpm. Eventually I was pulling up at traffic lights... turning off the car... wait for the engine to stop spinning... put her in second... green light... hit the ignition with the clutch out and take off in second. When I got it fixed the mechanic said the bearing was mashed and there were springs and shit flying around in there everywhere...

i hope thats the case, well i wish it was a loose bolt but if its the clutch its better than the gearbox.
