Lower Ball joints Thu, 01 August 2002 12:36 Go to next message
Hi All,

Hoping someone can share some experience on this.
I bought some lower ball joints for AE86 from local autoparts shop for my front lower arms.
Having compared them last night I'm not sure they're correct.
They are completely different from originals.
Much smaller and no grease nipple fitment. Also supplied with a large "C" clip. (Where does this fit ?)
I haven't removed the steering arm and rubber boot yet so I can't see for sure whether or not they'll fit ok.
Does my description of the replacement sound correct ? Is this the standard type of replacement?
I know aftermaket parts aren't always identical but can anyone set my mind at rest on this ? Question
I'm relunctant to rip it all apart and then find out I've got the wrong one and can't get replacements.

Appreciate any advice

Roger

I've replaced a few sets with no trouble, although they've always had grease nipples. The large clip goes around the whole thing, to lock it in place. You'll need circlip pliers to get the old one out and put that one in, as well as a press/vice+piece of pipe to get the old one out. If unsure, get someone to show you how its done!

Cheers mrshin,

I pulled the steering arms and rubber boots off last night and my replacement will fit.
They just looked different because they dont have the large grease chamber and nipples that OEM ones have.
Even so they're much better than the knackered originals and as you said they look easy enough to replace once apart so I'll pop them in and hope for the best.

I would check carefully before installing, the ones you have sound similar to the KE70 ball joint.

Yeah, I think you're right, I also bought Inner Tie Rods at the same time and the guy in the auto parts said he didn't have the actual ones listed for AE86 but that he would get the listed alternatives.
Funny enough the alternatives say KE70 on the box.
I assume they'll be OK due to the fact that the catalogue lists them as being a suitable alternative.
The only difference I could detect on the tie rods was the shoulder for the gaitor is slightly different - not enough to cause any problems though.
What do you think, Am I going to run into trouble here ?

Cheers,

Roger
