|

Since I'm going to the trouble of get this engine completely rebuilt, I wanted to O-ring the head and put on a copper head gasket if I want more boost in the future. Just wanted to find out who sells copper head gaskets (1.0mm - 1.5mm thick) and rough prices of them.
Cheers.

Well the head will be shaved (if needed) when it gets work done to it either today or tomorrow, then it would get o-ringed, right?

I would do the block more than the head.
because the block will more likely to stay flat then the head
(Iron block).
you can do both.
most people will do 1 side and the best side to do
is the block side.

Are you referring to o-ringing or just working on it in general?

I'm talking about O-rings and warping heads.
and cutting orings in the block

id be o-ringing the block, not the head
block = iron
head = alloy
unless of course, you decide to oring both

I'm sure whom ever builds your engine
will tell you that....

Just on your original question regarding head gaskets, I have an Autocad drawing of a Gen 2 gasket as I was going to get one lasercut for my rebuild. You can choose your thickness and material for that matter. They cost shit all to have done, about 65 bucks if I remember rightly.
I decided against it, I will do a full rebuild later on this year.
Are copper headgaskets exactly that, copper. Or are there other metals in them for some reason?

With so many aftermarket metal head gaskets available for 3S-GTEs, why go with copper? The only advantage I can see is their relatively cheap price & their re-usability. But with the amount of bad stories I've heard about them (but admittedly only without o-ringing) and then the fact that o-ringing is necesarry. Wouldn't it just be cheaper & easier to get a HKS or the like metal head gasket & not o-ring anything?
Or am I missing something?

As far as I know, they are just plain copper. Joel, I've been told that these head gaskets when used with o-ringed head/block, are a lot less likely to crack when you got to up the boost. Something I'll be taking into consideration since the CT26 can't be modified (or so Toyota says) if/when standard boost won't do after a while. I'm trying to keep options open.

The thing is dude, is that the chances of you cracking a good aftermarket metal head gasket (HKS et al) are pretty much slim to none in the first place. It's not as if the 3SGTE is known to have head gasket problems.
If you're having issues with one of them cracking there has been a problem with the way you've installed it, not a deficiency in the gasket itself.

Talking of 3s-gte engines and headgaskets... Does anyone have or know of a torque plate for the 3s? I'd like to use one when my block is being machined.
Cheers
