Hi I have a problem with my 86kw 4ag AW11 MR2.
Seems that when the car gets really hot... like on hot days or after a flogging, the idle drops right down to 600rpm... Usually it sits at 800-1000rpm in normal conditions and about 1500rpm when cold. This only happens occasionally. Just a bit of a pain in the A... cause its idling so low sometimes I have to blip the throttle to avoid a stall on takeoff at lights etc.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this... Dicky sensor or something ??? The car has always done it in the 2 years I have had it.

Clean your throttle body thoroughly with some sort of carby cleaner and install a clean airfilter.

Clean your pcv while your at it.

Just my 2c worth.

Had the same problem with my 4age, plus my v6 magna was doing the same thing, clean throttle and install new air filter and all is good know. Getting heaps better power delivery and fuel consumption has improved by 80kms per tank.

When you clean out the throttle body, do you open up the throttle and spray and clean inside as far as you can, or do you only clean around the opening, or something else?? My 4age does similar thing on hot day. coasting down a long hill in 4th , ive found car stalls when knock it into neutral at bottom of hill, real weird one

Nulon have a carb and throttle body cleaner that wont hurt your 02 sensor... Simply spray inside the throttle body (while the engine is off, as it wont run if yours is AFM) let soak for a minute and start the car.. repeat to clean the residue.. Nulon has been found to clean the top of the pistons.. whether this is true im not sure..

AW11's are notorious for air bubbles in the cooling system, have a look at http://www.mr2faq.com/mk1/faq/coolant/coolantflush .htm for instructions on how to bleed it. This will probably solve your problems, and your coolant could use a flush with summer coming on anyway...

Pull you induction hose/pipe off and stick your finger in till you hit the throttle plat, open it and you'll feel a small ridge/hump that the throttle plat closes onto, clean the plate the best you can (use an old tooth brush to help reach if you have to) and the ridge/hump as well.

Let it shit for a few minutes to do its work then redo the same process.

Let it sit for a few more minutes the put induction pipe/hose back on and start ya car. let it idle for a few moments to pass it thru the system then your on ya way.

Thats the way i was showed to do, and ive never had any drama's yet.

Just my 2c worth.

Steve

adamb131 its nice to know I'm not the only having exactly the same problem, its damn annoying....I'm going to give this a go aswell, although I'm not so keen on pulling throttle bodies apart or the AFM....but we'll see what happens...

Had the same problem in my rolla. I cleaned out the throttle body and the injectors and now its steady, not as jumpy as before, no stalling after i rev it.
