OT: R31 Skyline probs Thu, 08 January 2004 10:14 Go to next message
few questions, applies to 89 3.0L auto

1- is the trans electronically controlled?
2- if so does it have a separate trans computer or is it controlled via the main engine ecu.
3- how are trans fault codes shown? is the powershift light on the dash?
4- how do you check engine fault codes
5- is the dash supposed to have a ecu or check engine light?
6- what does the "powershift" button do? I assumed it was the O/D switch - but is O/D locked out when its on or off?

thanks..

I'll just answer what I know to be 100% correct

1. Yes
2. Combined with Engine ECU
3. Not 100% sure (the ECU has Yellow/Green LEDs that flash)
4. Not 100% sure
5. I will look for you tomorrow
6. Locks out 4th Gear (O/D) and raises transmission shift points slightly - Turn powershift on - 3 speed only, turn powershift off - 4 Speed.

btw ive found the auto ecu is separate and located under the passenger seat - the engine ecu is behind the kick panel - right?

anyway cheers.

Sorry, yes, meant to say
2. Engine ECU is transmission dependant.

if you were in Sydney I would let you borrow my ECU to see if that is your problem...

yeah ive located the trans ecu under the passenger seat - early rb30's had non-electronic autos,
skylines didnt get the elec auto till late 88 so im guessing the VL wouldnt have got it either cause they finnished in late 88.

anyway this gearbox aint runnin so good
- virtually no kickdown
- surges at light load and low speed
- ticking noise comming from gb
- and powershift light flashes

I think the auto ecu has gotten water damaged and maybe the G/B needs a service, any idea what that would involve.

cheers, and thanx for putting up with this inferior nissan shit. Smile

You can pick up a second hand series 3 gearbox from a wrecker for about $300 to $400 (I paid $300 in Sydney, but saw a few advertised up to $400)
I replaced my gerarbox my Torque convertor and the solonoid died ($300 just for the solonoid..)

Auto ECU's can probably be picked up at the same wreckers for about $50 as they hardley ever fail, so there is not much demand for them. if you can't find any in melbourne let me know and I'll hunt around up here for you...

I have the same car 89 Silhouette Auto..

found the gearbox had managed to fill itself up with water, the fluid is pink.

hopefully a flush or partial rebuild will do as its got fairly low k's

cheers
