have a look at Bill Sherwood's site (cant remember the url off the top of me head)
he does a good comparison between the 20v and 16v, which might be worth looking at as the 16v comes in a rwd format, which makes is a much easier install (if you're after easy).

Hey thanks for all replys its helped me out greatly.
www.adelaidejap.com.au seem to be a tad expensive (I mean $2,200 for a half cut)
The 4AGE 16v might be the way to go for now until I get away from school work... this engine accessory won't be happening until around mid year anyways as I'm spending all my money on buying this sprinter (absolutly stock -_- hence I want the engine done)....
In the mean time, whats the best thing to start on with a stock sprinter before the engine? I was thinking of new suspension and lowering it first....but yeh...what you all think?

in a 20 year old car, suspension would be a good place to start. If you can afford it get some adjustable Koni's otherwise KYB's are supposed to be pretty good.
Don't make it too low as it stuffs up the steering geometery.
low King springs should do the trick.
while you are at it, get some nolathane bushes.
I think Whiteline do thicker swaybars for ae86's and maybe a front strut brace as well.
That should make it handle a whole lot better, but I am sure that some AE86 guru's will have somethings to add.

Sorry in order I would do:
1: Fixed the current problems with the 20 year old car, i.e ball joints etc
2: Suspension
3: Brakes (as stock AUS ae86 brakes suck)
4: Engine
5: LSD

Although there is a long list of knowledge about these cars both here and on the net, i believe a good foundation is the key to any project.
Get the car checked by professionals to see if there are any problems that may appear in the near future.
Dont worry about the brakes just yet, while they are important, not yet anyway.
Worry about steering and suspenion, id talk to whiteline (or any other reputable company)first about their "the works" package.
Next i would do brakes, get someone in the know to basically check and rebuild/repair where neccessary, new quality pads and a machine. I dont think the standard brakes are all that bad when treated and maintained well.
Motor would be next, which is up to you really what and which type you use.
Then maybe a lsd.
It also depends on the funds too
Just my thoughts.

if your planning big power upgrades i would do brakes first as that may alter your suspension upgrades in the future.

Interesting,
So brakes might effect suspension upgrades in the future?
Hmmmmm, I have a bit to think about.....especially trying to get this sprinter...I agree the 4ac does seem to be a suckie engine.
As I am quite new to car work, this will be my project car for the next 2+ years, I'll be hosting a site once I get my sprinter and its going to have a detailed description of each mod and pics with it....would anyone be interested in seeing something like this?

ppl would be interested if you went to great detail with pictures. some ppl dont bother to go into great detail with their articles, i tried to be very detailed in my brake article but some may get confused cause its from the eyes of a mechanic. if you can explain in normal ppl terms ppl will like
and i dont reckon stock suspension sux too bad, pretty good for a 20 yo car.
