I happily go by the dipstick, as mine is in good condition that seats properly into the shaft that also seats properly. I usually put around 3L in then start the car without revs and let the oil circulate to refill galleries, pump and filter, then shut off and check the dipstick, adding to bring the level to the top increment - usually around 3.5-4L total. I'd recommend an oil with a higher than naturally aspirated viscosity rating, say something like a 22/60 - 25/70, and change it more regularly than every 10 000Kms. The oil in my daily driver is changed evey 5000KMs, and in my 3TGTE every 1000KMs or so (this take me about a year to do 1000Kms).
