3TGTE Forged Pistons Fri, 09 January 2004 02:07 Go to next message
I'm toying with the idea of seeing if a group buy of forged pistons is a viable option for the 3TGTE. At the moment bore size is yet to be determined, and I'll certainly not be placing an order before late March/April, so if you are interested but have no money - start saving! If it does go through, the only way I'll confirm an order for you is after a deposit with your request, so curious to know who is interested with those terms in mind?

Also thinking about a group buy for gasket kits if there is interest?

In a 2T-G these pistons would yeild a lower compression ratio than when used in 3T unless a 3T crank was also used. This may allow greater boost levels than otherwise but will compromise off-boost response.

What application did you have in mind for your 2T-GTEU?

Yup. If the compression is too low though you may have problems ~ I reckon that supercharger you're looking for will only be able to be geared up so far before it fails. If the compression is too low you'll never explore the low compression motor's headroom.

Remember that the 2T-GEU should be running around 8.#:1 compression as is.

Hence the fact that I asked about freakincage_com's intended application. This user seems to post a lot of "Hey dude, I'm really interested..." type comments to do with anything related to TA22 Celica. I'd hate to see him disappointed when his street driven 2T-GTEU that won't boost and drives like a dog anywhere under 3000RPM , then requires reliability-infringing levels of boost to counter low static compression to make power when boost finally arrives.

There may be some provision to address the compression ratio from the piston's perspective, by asking them not to machine the tops prior to delivery. People chasing a specific CR could then have them machined to suit, after checking clearances. You could also address head gasket selection and squish area if needs be, however this is not my interest in this thread - research for yourselves on this matter.

Ideally, and if we could get enough people interested, a set of piston's may be around $750-800 without the face machining. Does anyone have a stuffed 3TGTE piston suitable for measurements - all mine are still in engines?!?

I'd be up for a set depending on the price, i'd want them machined as i just want them to slot in straight away with no stuffing around
PS: i guessing these would come with rings to suite

Yep, sorry. While rings can be a personal preference type of thing, I'd propose to pick the best performance ring at reasonable to acceptable cost to be supplied with the pistons.

I'd appreciate those who are interested to give me the compression ratio they want from the pistons assuming a stanard head cc, and a 1mm head gasket please? Personally, I'd be happy with something around the 8-8.5:1 range, what do the rest of you want?

Ok, one of the guys interested has let me know he's had a situation (hmmmm, sound like a piston's let go?!!!), and would like to get hold of a set sooner rather than later. Is anyone interested in doing anything within the month, even confirming an order, and putting $150 deposit down? I'll do the calculations for those interested in compression if you supply me the details of your engine be PM please?

Clint
