icon9.gif  Upgrades on the 4k...plz help!!!! Fri, 09 January 2004 12:36 Go to next message
i know its not a very powerful engine BUT i was wondering if there are any small mods i can do to make it quicker?
currently it has extractors going into a straight through 2&1/4" exhaust.

now, ive been told that the 4k is one of the slowest engines around but for a 1.3 it does have a bit of a kick... this is most likely due to the exhaust and extractors, yeh?

i thought i could add a better quality carby on it to make it quicker?
if so what would some of you guys recommend on a 1.3 4k-c engine?

thanx in advance

thanx mate. that helped a little.
i know i probably wont get any answers... (never seem to..) but i was wondering what sort of carby i could get to increase the power
and i was also wondering about a new diff - what to get and how much if people know?

at a guess i reckon with extractors and exhaust my car might be sitting at around 70-75bhp?
i would like to get it to hopefully 100bhp without spending over $500-$700
is this a realistic prospect?

try twin carbies bigger exhaust porting and shaving the head and improving the spark strenght and you might get to abotu the 100 hp mark
of course im speculating

yep the same question everyone would like to know the answer to...how do I get heaps more power while spending f..k all.

there is no untapped hidden reserve of power lurking in these motors or any NA motor for that matter.

here's the recipe :

cam, carb, headwork and compression.
then youll need your carby jetted and distibutor modded.

power will be around 100-130 hp.

budget : much more than u got..

if this motor is in a KE10 or KE20 then I would mod it, but if its in anything heavier forget it - do a 4ag conversion instead.

how much can you do yourself? that determines cost.

carby is not needed until you start changing cams. even then, anything bigger than a 34/34 or 32/36 weber is not needed. twin side draughts are nice, but that alone blows your budget.

get a mild cam (Camtech stage 3.. doesn't need dual springs), new stock valve springs (less than $50), extractors, 3K head, some exhaust porting if you do it yourself, extractors, 1.75"-2" exhaust (don't skimp on the mufflers, or it will sound like a gemini.. ie 1 or 2 resonators and a reverse-flow type), get a Jaycar HEI for your points. ditch standard air cleaner (terrible), and make a cold air duct.
oh, and get the rods/pistons balanced!! very important!!!!
this will get you a motor that will rev to 7000rpm, and have peak power of around 85-95hp. but still be nice down low.

if you do it all yourself, it will be pretty cheap... but close to your budget.

If you only want to spend $500 - $700 i would get rid of the 4k and go out and buy a 5k or a 7k if you can get your hands on one. I had a 4k with bigger cam twin Toyota down drought carbies,10:1 compression, extractors and 2" exhaust in my KE15 corolla. That motor died so i bought a stock 5k and just put it in with the carbies and exhaust and it had a lot more power and torque. I have also had a down drought weber on a 5k in a KE10 with standard manifold and 1-3/4" exhaust and that also had a lot more power then the old mild 4k. With the diff just take it out and weld it up, it will be a lot stronger!!! It might be a bit hard to drive around car parks but a lot of fun to drive in the wet and it will help the little corolla drift if that is your thing. If you have a few tools and a service manual have a go your self it will be the only way to learn and if you get stuck someone will be able to help you out.

Go the might corolla

good luck
