well given the tank is behind the back seat maybe pressure in the cabin is building and its expanding/contracting to suit?

switch your heater controls from 'recirc' to 'fresh' and see if the noise is still there.
We have ppl complaining all the time at work that doors on new Toyota's are hard to close, until we tell them to do that.
also helps for keeping windows from fogging up.

as ned flanders would say - 'thats a dilly of a pickle!'
I have a KE55 and I havent had such noises coming from my petrol tank... the only thing i can think of, may not come from the petrol tank itself, but the spring loaded mechanism of the boot (located under the parcel shelf, between the 2 boot hinges) has a similar sound when you close the boot..and that is directly in front (or behind...whatever!!) of the tank.
Its may not help, but thats my two cents.
Good Lick,
