What is it exactly that these NRMA boys look for when they do their inspections ?
I would appreciate it (if you know) if you can list everything they do / check for.

Everything that they see wrong with the car, it depends on the car also, like my friend got a GTR inspected and they sent out a GTR expert, the usual stuff, they check i am just guessing would be brakes, brake pads, tyres, engine bay for leaks or sign of ware, look under the car, check that everything is working, look at the body panels for signs of repair, etc and they write u up a report.

heh even if they did say its defectable, they cant really do much about it. It would have about as much effect as me telling you the same thing.
i just saw the site too. they'd have a field day on my car, the report would be about 6 pages long

It depends on what sorta state your cars in.
It would probably be very worth it as preventative maintenance, i'd trust them to root out problems more than the average Gas'n'Go mechanic, because the NRMA wont make money on the repairs. So they'll tell you what needs to be done, what could be done and whats ok..

Let me tell you my problem with NRMA inspections.
In my experience that have covered their ass so bad! When mum was selling the Landcruiser we had an inspection done and the dude rocks up and tells us that the head gasket is blown! what an idiot! the car had never overheated and the gasket was fine (this was like about 1.5 years before we actually sold it). He didn't do a CO2 test or anything. I don't know what he did to come up with that verdict, but it meant that we sure as heck didn't sell it that day.
They are so paranoid, that they would rather over-diagnose than under-diagnose and then be 'wrong', and perhaps liable.
When I bought my Celica, I had the same test done, the dude rocks up and spots a lot of little things like "incorrectly installed radio antenna" and stuff like that that was true, but also says that my power steering pump is leaking.
Now I KNOW that Toyotas power steering pumps are built like sieves, and they all seem to leak, so I wasn't surprised. But what has surprised me, is that in the 2.5 years that I have had the car, I have never had to top up the fluid because of a leak. In fact, on the white concrete that I park it on, it has never dropped a drip of anything at all.
In both cases, the NRMA dude made a call which was wrong, and a call that would have been very expensive, if we had tried to get the 'problem' fixed.
I sure don't appreciate that kind of self protective diagnosis, and so, I am not all that enthusiastic about their services in this regard. Not that I don't think they can't and don't spot valuable and significant problems, I just think that they have a higher agenda, their own preservation, which jeopardises their doing a good job.

I've had 2 done, one on a Mk II Supra(which I didn't end up getting, the inspection was right, car woulda cost me more money to fix than to buy..). I got another one done on my current TA23, was really helpful, pointed out that my front suspension had seized(explained the shite ride over bumps, so I got that fixed), they give you a full rundown on the car, any problems they find they try to give an estimate of repair costs. My car's got a K&N filter, big exhaust and a few other goodies and he didn't say a word about engineering, but then again neither does my mech when I take it for a rego either

Mate all that said I'd say it depends largely on the inspector you get, for eg. the inspector I got said he really enjoyed driving the car on its test drive
