Hilux 1992 SR5 conversion options Sat, 10 January 2004 13:00 Go to next message
Hi,

I own a 1992 Toyota Hilux SR5 Xtra-Cab.
The engine is a 22R (carbie) 5-speed manual.

I was wondering what engine conversions were possible, i was looking at a 1G-GTE or 1G-GZE is this at all possible? or does anyone have information on this?

I have heard of superchared 22R's but i have been unable to locate any info on this. any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

I had a 91 SR5 with a 22r. I ripped that out and stuck in the 3VZ-FE 3.0 litre V6. It was pretty straight forward because I could buy parts from a V6 4runner and parts (like radiator, air cleaner, ECU, clutch cylinder etc) all bolt straight up to existing holes. This made the job look ex factory which helped at inspection time. With a set of extractors and T/B size increase the thing went pretty well.

I'd be looking at something with a bit more capacity that the 1G series.

You need big torque down low. That V6 conversion above looks the goods...

Maybe the 2.7L EFI in the ~2000 model? Then one of those turbo kits for it?

Great idea thou.. I love the old Hiluxs.

Hey on a related note, is it true that commerical vehicles such as the Hilux don't have a cat convertor?
