Close call...a message to 7m owners! Sun, 11 January 2004 11:36 Go to next message
Lucky i took the time and bother to pull down my bottom end today. Surprised Big end no 6 was absolutely rooted...a few more km could've been lethal. Surprised (for those not so mechanically inclined - the brass showing on the bearing shows severe wear)
If this had've gone further, it almost certainly woul've latched onto the crank and become what we call "a spun big end bearing" - the thing that makes that knocking sound!
So please If anyone ever blows a hg or rebuilds their 7m, for christ's sake pull down the bottom end check the big ends!
It was at cylinder no 6 - the same cylinder that had blown out, and scored the bore so much - the piston which got the hottest. It minorly scored the crank, but ill get away with it.

Heres the pic - thanks allan!

most of them were worn, but that was by far the worst...suprisingly all the other journals on the crank were perfect! All mains good too!

Could be a whole range of things, some of which include labouring these engines will kill big end bearings very quickly, as will the oil level being low.

Got picture of the crank journal(s)?
