New Engine for an SV21 Camry

Hey my 1992 SV21 camry currently has 198k on the clock. When the engine eventually goes i was thinking of changing to a different engine. I looked up what engines i can get on the site and this is what i came up with: 4A-GZE, 3S-GTE, 5VZ-FE, 1MZ-FE
(Pls correct me if I'm wrong about any of this)
Now as far as i know the 3S-GTE has been transplanted into Camrys successfully and turbo charged.
The 5VZ-FE is the 2.2L L4 engine that replaced the 3S-FE.
The 1MZ-FE is the 3.0 V6 that is in gen 3 onwards Camrys
You site says the 4A-GZE is"1.6L DOHC EFI 16V supercharged inline four cylinder".
What i want to get is the sort of price/availability i would be looking at for engine swapping to one of those engines (including things like extractors, sports chip etc )
And what would give me the best boost in horsepower.

It's actually 5SFE.. the 2.2 out of the wide body.
As an alternative, you could try looking for a 3SGE. But no matter what engine you stick in it (apart from the later 3SFE from the RAV4), you'll need engineering on it which may include better brakes.

Yep. To be even "roadworthy".
Basically as long as it doesn't crack the 103kW mark, you're safe but anything over it will require engineering.. at least in NSW.

Well, unless the 1st series 3SGE is made after your car, you won't have much chance putting it into your series 2 Camry. Modding the GE with extras may need engineering. Gotta ask them but the 15% increase in power does incur a trip to the engineers. That's in the RTA rules on their web site.
Btw, SV21R was the last of the SV21 which I no longer own.

hehe mine has 360,000 now, and was rebuilt at 330,000, and it was tortured with a lot of heavy trailer towing , so your camry will last a long while.
Yeah 3sge would be best, i think the first gen 3sge will be
just on or under the 103kw mark, used in 1986-88 celicas .
Im getting a 3rd gen 3sge out of a 1995 mr2 bathurst, 129kw or 173hp n/a , so il have to wait to see about engineering. I was looking over the GIO Insuranse renual papers and had a look at things regarded as modifications, and i ticked all the boxes , i need to find a different insurer when i get the mr2 motor.

Docktakay, and a few other have fitted 3sgte to the sv21, so if enginneering is needed might as well go the whole hog.

out of interest.. what does the RTA mean by power? kw?
if you fit a restrictor like in rally could you go a bigger engine for torque without having it engineered?

Are you sure that a 15% increase in power requires an Engineering Certificate?
I thought it was a 15% increase in engine capacity, otherwise every time you turned the boost up, you'd need to get a cert?
Besides, how could they tell, the RTA don't have dynos.
Brake upgrades are easy.
GT4 calipers (either Aussie single piston or Jap twin piston) bolt on with no other mods (except for grinding a way a bit of the backing plate for clearance), you don't even need to change discs or brake lines.
3S-GE were available in a lot of cars apart from what we got here.
Celica ST18x, ST20x (except fro Aus & US who got lame 5S
Corona, Carina, Caldina, Curren.
Some of these had GT versions with the 3rd Gen. I think the Corona GT had 140 odd kW.
Just make sure you've got the rear discs as well (about $300 to do this from my experience)
PS I might have a 2.0L SOHC turbo diesel for sale shortly if you're interested that'll bolt straight in 50FWkW & 200FWNm

The costs may end up being that for just a bit extra, i could get the car that goes arround the engine, so im also going to price MR2s and celicas.

Well, they've changed it since I last looked at the 15% power rule. That'll make upgrading even better.
