selling a car... you have to decide one of two options.
1. with rego and plates..
Get the transfer form from your local RTA, or Vicroads (or whatever). Get a road worthy for your car, and away you go. Buyer normally pays for the stamp duty and paperwork costs.
Cancel insurance.
2. without rego and plates.
You MUST cancel your registration from the local RTA. (not unless you want the new driver to start clocking demirit points with your name).
From there, just a personal sales reciept declaring the vehicle make, colour, VIN code, engine number. Your name, adress, buyers name and adress and sell amount.
cancel your insurance.
----------------------------
ALL DONE....
hope this helps. It could be different up in sydney, but that's how we do it in victoria.
all the best les.

Thanks mate!
Umm is there a need for a contract ? Or should i just write up a receipt for acknoledgement of the $$$$?
Also, do I wait til the bank cheque clears i.e. hold the car til it goes through before I give him the car ??
or is a bank cheque pretty safe ?

Urm.. there really is no contract (not unless he's laid a deposit, and wants to be secure that you'd reserve the car for him). Just a sales reciept
The reciept should go...
"I the *insert name* of *insert adress* have recieved the amount of *insert price* (*price worded*) for the full payment of *insert car*, *engine number/chassis code* from *insert buyer name*......"
you get my drift. You should put liscence numbers too if possible.

with regards to cheques,
that is a tough one, cause bank cheques could always bounce, and you don't want that to happen do ya.
Maybe if you two go to the bank to transfer the funds into your account. I dunno.
I've always bought and sold cars from dealerships or with cash.

as far as i know a bank cheque cant bounce, since you have to actually buy them from the bank (ie hand over $10k and the bank give you a bank cheque for $10k, therefore the funds are already cleared)

As far as i know u dont need any reciept unless u are selling without rego, all you have to do is fill out the transfer of ownership form on the rego papers and give the new owner one half nad send the other half to the rta, if selling with no rego the reciept is required so the other person can proove they purchased the car not just stole it or something.

I got a b ank cheque to buy my car, so I had to fork over the $5K at the bank, then the bank writes the cheque, very very unlikely to have any problems.
