Small port + Bigport cams Tue, 13 January 2004 10:48 Go to next message
I have spare bigport cams and thinking of installing them this weekend. The bigport has a higher lift and duration? so it should give a few more kw advantage? What are your thoughts? give it a go or dont bother?

Duration
Lift
Intake opening
Exhaust opening
Comments

Smallport 4AG
232°
7.1mm
8°BTDC

47°BBDC

Stock 4AG(Z)EU used on 90~91 Hi-comp. AE92 and supercharged AW11. P/N Intake 13501-16030. Ex. 13502-16020, Good turbo cam. Keeps exhaust pressures high without blowing back though intake manifold.

Bigport 4AG
240°
7.56mm
9°BTDC

(Stock -max lift @ 111°)
51°BBDC

(Stock -max lift @ 111°)
Stock 4AGEU used on AE86 and AW11. P/N Intake 13501-16010. Ex. 13502-16010. Some have found good power setting the maximum lobe lift for the exhaust at 100°BTDC and intake at 100°ATDC. For more bottom end power retard the exhaust 4° and advance the intake 3°. For more top end, advance intake 4°and exhaust 3° from stock settings.

Also will this change the sound characteristics? I really love the roar of the tvis motor over the small port.. is that with the intake? or cams?

i'd give it a go, but dont expect huge gains.

remember, the small port develops "better" power because the air enters the cylinders at a higher velocity, bigger cams could actually harm power production.

having said that, i am planning on running bigport cams in my smallport 4age eventually.

"remember, the small port develops "better" power because the air enters the cylinders at a higher velocity, bigger cams could actually harm power production"

this is due to the port and intake design, not the cams. id say youll just notice a small mid to top end improvement.

its been done before.

if you posted at club4ag.com you might get an answer from someone whos actaully done it.

the sound will change slightly, you may or may not notice though. id say the differance in sound is more due to the intake design than the cams.

whether its worth it depends on whether you can get some one to fit them/ajust youre valve clearance cheaply.

I posted on club4ag cause i was curious my self and it turns out there would be 1-3hp gains, but not enough to be very noticable. But any power gain is enough for me.

Hope it helps.

If you've got the cams, by all means do it. And, as said, make sure you do it right Evil or Very Mad If you've never done it yourself before, offer a case of beer to someone who knows... Very Happy

Changing cams isn't hard. Just unbolt the old ones and bolt in the new ones.

Adjusting the shims so the clearances between the cam lobe and the valve is a hassle. I have never done it myself, but I believe it involves a lot of measure clearance, remove cam, adjust shims, fit cam, repeat. Although I'm sure someone like MrShin, IRA11Y of maybe even Google could enlighten us.
