Speed Cameras

Hey ppl, I'm going to dispell some myths about speed cameras... Happy Reading!!!
How do the digital cameras work? The fixed speed cameras detect the speed of vehicles by using piezo electronic detectors embedded into the road surface. These piezo detectors deflect slightly when a vehicle is driven over the detectors, which then triggers an electronic device that accurately measures the speed of the vehicle. If the speed of the vehicle exceeds the legal limit then a digital picture is taken of the offending vehicle.
What does the camera record? If a vehicle is detected speeding, a digital image of the vehicle is recorded onto a disk from which all details regarding the speeding vehicle can be extracted. The image clearly shows the colour, type, make and number plate of the vehicle. Fixed digital speed cameras have the capacity to measure speed in both directions. Digital images also include the following particulars: Date of the offence Time of the offence Location details of the camera which took the picture Direction of travel of the offending vehicle Speed of the offending vehicle Speed limit applying to the road where the camera is situated The lane that the vehicle was travelling within Other security and integrity parameters
How do the fixed speed cameras work in multi-lane situations? Fixed speed cameras can monitor one to four lanes in the same direction. In the Eastern Distributor, northbound for example, cameras have been installed and configured to simultaneously monitor all four lanes. This is achieved by the installation of piezo detectors for each lane and of a wide angle lens camera, which monitors all lanes, and a telephoto lens camera, targeting each traffic lane. Therefore it is clear which vehicle has been detected. Vehicles cannot avoid camera detection by straddling lanes.
Can the cameras identify a speeding vehicle in a line of traffic? A speeding vehicle can be detected and photographed even if it is within a line of vehicles. The angle at which the cameras are set enables pictures to be taken even if another vehicle is in close proximity.
Signage at Speed Camera Sites The key objectives of the fixed speed camera program are to ensure that drivers keep to the legal speed limit and to reduce crashes and thereby prevent deaths and injuries on NSW roads.
Every fixed speed camera is accompanied by high profile advance warning signs and a media release detailing the camera location, accident history at the site and the date of commencement of camera operation.
There are three warning signs installed on the approach to fixed speed cameras. These signs all depict an image of a speed camera, together with an applicable warning message, in the left panel and the regulatory speed limit in the right panel. The three signs appear in the following order on approach to the speed camera and read as follows: 'speed camera 24 hours'; 'speed camera ahead'; and 'heavy fines loss of licence'.
All this information was stolen from the RTA website at www.rta.nsw.gov.au - Safety - Road Safety Information to be precise... There is also a list of the permanent speed camera locations in the entire of NSW... I still say that speed cameras suck but they say that they somehow save lives...

I hav'nt read all of the above but I will clear something up for you! The pictures that are taken are not digital! If they were, they would'nt be allowed in cought which means you could getaway with every ticket that arrives in the mail!

This is the bit of propoganda I love:
"The key objectives of the fixed speed camera program are to ensure that drivers keep to the legal speed limit and to reduce crashes and thereby prevent deaths and injuries on NSW roads."
Let's not kid ourselves, speed cameras exist to make money. And they are doing very well at it indeed! I still can't believe people speed in the tunnel!!
For the last three years since the ever increasing number of fixed speed cameras really started to climb in number and the introduction of the double demerit points in holiday periods etc the rode toll has only slowed for one quarter. That is, it make stuff all difference to safety.

i saw that there is meant to be section on today tonight about speed camera's and in the previews they showed spraying things over number plates and stuff like that, guess they will be checking if these things actually stop the camera from getting your plate. but i don't see how things like that would actually make a difference

There was a write up in the Hot4's mag a while agao! They tested just about all of those sprays and just about everything else they could get their hands on! The sprays did'nt work one bit! The only thing that worked was a plastic thing that went over the plate, these things work by not allowing you to see the numbers from an angle! But if a police car goes past you and cant read your numbers you will get a fine for sure!

I agree that speed cameras are revenue raisers but not the fixed ones. They are usually placed in trouble spots and if you still speed past them after the 3 rather large signs then you deserve to pay. I wouldn't think that the fixed ones would catch many people, just slow them all down, which I guess is their objective...(apparently)

Tim,
You'd be surprised. Driving home of a night from the city, it is amazing the number of times you see the camera near sydney airport tunnel go off. Quite good to watch at night.
And yes, there are MANY signs to tell you about it.....

yeah i watched it wasn't testing what thing stop camera's from picking up your plate they were just talking about how people try to avoide getting tickets like how they make up fake plates and all that sort of stuff one interesting one was a plate which had glass bits like sand sized glass glued over the plate so when the flash on the camera went off it only made a blur but the moral of the show was saying that police are stepping up with special policemen out to just get people who have plates that are blocked by something or are to hard to see and so forth but its all in victoria
