Forgive my ignorance but was the 18RG ever the standard engine for an officially imported Toyota?
I'm just curious..

Yes..
RA23 Celica GT
The gearbox was also different.
I had a 76 Celica with a GT 5 Speed, the bearing sizes are totally different.
That's my experience anyway.

The first type of celica GT to officially come to Australia was the ST185 GT4. (14,000 came over I think)
All the ones before that were private imports.
yes, the P51 bits are different, I saw a microfish sp? of one, it is quite different.
Close ratio was just the beginning!

fair enough.
My old man had his '76 coupe, and I remember him talking about there being the GT model available. *shrugs*
There was a 2ltr 6 cyl corona of the same vintage also.
Our neighbour had 2 collecting dust 1 was a 4cyl. the other was the 2ltr 6cyl. no idea what model engine. but that wasn't a converted car either.
I guess there are plenty of private imports, and after 1 or 2 owners who knows about it then....

The Corona MkII came with a 2 litre six (M engine) and later a 2.6 litre (4M). There are a few of these around, and they're not private imports. Genuine GT Celicas definitely are though.

You'll probably all call me crazy but GT's were imported into Oz.
Only a few into the eastern states though (NSW and Vic)... maybe like five or six?
They were imported by toyota and I think a couple went to private buyers while the rest where used as showroom cars.
I'll find out a bit more info on it when my dad gets back from holidays as he bought my celica brand new back in '76 and he's sure there was a few aussie complicanced GT's imported by toyota. Shame he didn't buy one or i'd have it now...
I saw one on the a web page that was in melbourne as well. The guy was planning to take out the 18-RG and put in a 3S-GTE. A car like that should be left original.

I'm aware that some individual Toyota dealers brought in GT's (often as a promotional exercise) but they were never officially endorsed by Toyota Australia.

Yeah, you're right, they weren't porperly endorsed. I asked my dad and he sadi it was about 120 though, not five or six, both RA23's and TA22's, and they all went to private buyers eventually. So if you wanna find a genuine one, there out there. Or you could just import one from japan.
