after advice about plasma cutting Wed, 14 January 2004 11:35 Go to next message
hi folks,

i was wondering if anyone knows:
-what width do portable plasma cutters remove in a cut
-what i might pay for this (am BNE based)
-any suggestions on categories in the yellowpages?

i'm trying to separate the intake & exhaust parts of the manifold on my turbo 18RC - it's a custom job, 12mm mild steel with lots of stuff welded to it.

current form:
http://members.optushome.com.au/mkhala/red_celica/pictures/car08-custom-manif-face.jpg

roughly were i want it cut:
http://members.optushome.com.au/mkhala/red_celica/pictures/car08-custom-manif-face_mod.jpg

i'm hoping that it will make engine assembly slightly easier - plus help with reducing heat from the intake side of things.

i can't get it laser cut as there's no cad drawings for the plate and it's got stuff welded to it anyway so it can't sit flat on a bed without props & clamps.

if you know of someone in the oxley, sumner park, archerfield parts of brisbane who could do this kind of thing i'd love to know. manifold will be out of car for next week.

tia,
charles.

hiya blake, if you think they could cut this kind of thing .. i'm all ears Wink

i went to a place in sumner park and he infers that their laser cutting machines were only setup for flat stuff - so i figured it was same thruout industry - most of the pics on websites looked liked computer-controlled flatbed cutters.

hey off the subject charles, have you ever tried like cold air flow into your engine bay? Like what im doing with my supras? I.e two bits of pvc pipe - running from the front grille into the bay, using a couple of 45 and 90' bends?

there's not many holes to push the air thru ... tho at the moment i'm really trying to get as much air thru the radiator as possible - it has been running hot and with the newly fixed aircon i gotta install my 3-core radiator asap.

i'm going to shift number plate to bumber bar to get more air flowing thru to the radiator(s). plus - after i go EFI, the intercooler piping will go thru the front walls just above the bumber-bar brackets - tho i gotta open up the holes there before doing so.

i could use outer section of gap below the bumper as scoop mount-points to get air to under the bonnet, but it will means cutting thru the wheel arches to feed any piping - i'd use flexible pipe for that tho.

another option is using the air gaps just under the lip of the bonnet to feed air thru to engine bay.

once the intercooler is in, there will be:
-intercooler
-small trans cooler (in oil line to turbo)
-air con condensor
-engine radiator

i should have a a look at your setup some time - as im v.curious about how you're going to keep the v8 cool and deal with heat from the exhaust.

charles.

the ma70 is receiving 2 eventually...one for exhaust to start - then one for intake to prevent heat transfer

The ma61...well i have to cut two holes in the chassis somewhere near the radiator...feel free to drop around sometime dude. But the ma61 has a stupidly large radiator also. And bonnet vents of some kind will be used.

the amount of spare room in there also, its highly unlikely ill have any dramas whatsoever...its not cramped - in fact the motor sits about 350mm back from the radiator.

you can do the one on the left then Wink

i was (at one point) wondering how many disks i'd need if i used my trusty baby hitachi angle grinder. it's my last resort if no joy...

i've got a name to try on thursday (APR engineering) -

by die-grinder do you mean an air drill with a small and thin cutting disk?

this kind of tool?:

or
<http://www.air-allied.com.au/product.html?id=25>

but am not sure what thecurring bit would look like?

do you know how to use a hacksaw, or any saw or file?
the teeth cut ONLY on the forward stroke and you need to
release the downward pressure on the return stroke to save their
cutting ability, and not round them off.

umm ... yes i remember that lesson - its the one that says "after manually sawing thru 12mm of mild steel, your right arm will not function for 12 hours and anyway you cannot afford to buy any more blades..." lesson that i'm worried about

associates a metal fabricator ( in syd ) and have seen him use a cutter using very thin wire
dunno what the machines caled or if this of any assistance yet thought why not offer it in case it is
it was used to cut a crank so id imagien it can be used on items that arent flat in that case
