Toyota Liteace on steroids

Hey guys,
I have a clean 1985 Liteace van with the 1.8 litre 2Y-C ohv motor and 5 speed and am wanting ideas about fitting a more gutsy engine.
The only clue anyone has had for this so far is the larger 4y 2.2 litre which is an easy but not very exciting conversion.
The Y series motors are bulletproof but not made for drag racing if you get my drift, a turbo could be a possibility but would not know which bits to use????
I would prefer to use the existing gearbox.
Any suggestions welcome
Greg

How much room do you have to play with? AFAIK the Y series engines are designed to be fairly short (hence the OHV) so they'll fit under the seats. Something like an 18R-G would make it get up and go but they're likely to be much taller due to the DOHC layout. Maybe something more compact like a 4A-GZE could be squeezed under there?

I suggest getting the measuring tape out. Check height, width, length of the engine compartment.
I knew a guy who had a 7M-GE in his mid 80's Hiace. Dunno if these are differnet though.

Keep us posted on your progress/ideas!
It'll definately be different.
I learnt to drive in the exact same type of van as yours. Great fun to drive with all your mates in it.
Is yours a YM21 model?? People mover or work van??

Will get back to you on engine bay dimensions but critical factors at this point are engine access (engine cover limits access to RHS of engine so assume ready access to LHS and top only. 18RG carbs on rhs would be very hard to fiddle with I would think). Fuel tank on RHS hence exhaust must be on LHS as is Y series. The bigger Hiace was available with 18R,22R,3&4Y,2C OHC diesel, the liteace was also avail with the C series diesel and the 4K OHV. Have seen pic of a Nissan sr20 engine in liteace on meggala.com site but no details on build yet. My van is the YM21V model, no rear seats. I want to hang on to standard 5 speed because to change this makes the whole job much more tricky so would prefer to stick with Toyota engines unless an adapter is available, at this point I don't know which motors will bolt to this gearbox. I'm not considering anything other than inline fours, most fours would fit but a six would need to extend too far forward plus this vehicle is already very nose heavy. The easy option is to get a 2.2 litre 4Y and improve carb, cam and fit extractors can't know if this would be adequate though. My sentimental favourite is a turbo on the standard 1.8 litre 2Y but I doubt anyone has ever done this so I'm wondering if I could rip a turbo off a Japanese motor and hook it up with a suck through carb???. I'm also worried about trying to adapt EFI to this vehicle though I realise a more modern motor would almost certainly have this.

if you are up for a challenge,
4Y block, 2TG head, turbo = pretty gutsy. there are some pages floating around about it.
it would be different, have shiteloads of torque if you can limit yourself to about 6 or 8psi (with smallish turbo), and give ppl a bit of a scare

Hey guys,
thanks for the input, it's great , The engine bay on my liteace is around 73cm from rear bulkhead to radiator, width of engine bay is around 70cm but the engine covers which the seats sit on slope down at the outer edges with a bulge in the centre to clear the engine so not all the width is useable because of height restrictions and lack of access as the engine cover on the RHS is a bolt on affair. The height of my 2y-c from sump to upper engine accessories is around 61cm with very little clearance above that to engine cover. I have learned my 5 speed gearbox is the G53 model so would still like to know what motors this will bolt up to this if anybody knows??
The 2tg head on 4y block is interesting but I read a few posts concerning the T series and apparently its easy even for a toyota expert to get themselves in hot water trying to match up different T series bits, all sorts of tricky custom machining etc.
I didn't see anything specifically about the 2tg head on the 4y block though. Maybe a stock T series would bolt straight in??, I don't think I mentioned I can't afford to spend a fortune on this.....

hmm, i can't seem to find it atm either :/ ... i'll find it and link it for you...
certainly looked not bad..
a friend of mine is doing 4Y block, 3TC head, turbo. looking at some 3SGTE aftermarket rods and VW forged pistons.... he's looking for around 7.5 or 8:1 with a lot of boost...
would be interesting
