Head gasket on a camry

My dads '89 camry is leaking coolant and was told the head gasket is going and was quoted around $3000 to fix. I thought this sounded a bit crazy, surely all that needs to be done is pull the head off, change the gasket and reseal ?
Any ideas on if this is the case?
Cheers !

that is ridiculous... well a little exxy.. all depends on how bad it is.
a simple hg change shouldn't cost that much
the head will likely need to be taken to a head shop and be cleaned up.
we did my mates 4age rolla the other day.. took quite a long time, but wasn't hard.
We put a new water pump in and stuff and got the head cleaned up and machined.
I think the parts ended up costing like $1000 everything included as well sa some tools we had to get.

I dont have to replace head bolts do I and I can simply unscrew them with a socket set yes ?
I can get the head machined down at a machine shop so all I need is the gasket and torque settings for the head ?

ummmm
you will need double hex for the head bolts I think. torque wrench too.
if you want to do it yourself I totally recommend a workshop manual unless you are heaps familiar. it will walk you through what all you need to do and what tools you need etc.
it is very time consuming that is the thing that makes it expensive not that it is hard or requires expensive parts
