ma61 diff rebuild Thu, 15 January 2004 08:55 Go to next message
Has anyone had their diff rebuilt? I need to get mine done and I'm not totally sold on a Torsen diff so I was thinking of getting my centre rebuilt. How much? Any other options aprt from Torsen, KAAZ, TRD etc? I'd really like to get new clutches and have it shimmed moderately for street/occasional strip work.

i'm pretty sure he had a torsen centre squeezed in there with a friendlier gears(make that final drive ratio a little easier on the fuel bill Razz)

Yes, I have a torsen type diff (Detroit TrueTrac). Note that clutch-type LSD's wear out quickly when you put lots of power through them, ie the clutches wear and you lose the LSD function. This especially applies to the stock LSD which has fairly small clutches, although aftermarket units tend to be better. You'd be nuts not to go torsen if you're going aftermarket though, they're awesome for the street and they don't have any wear components.

I have a Detroit TrueTrac LSD Diff Centre for my MA61 sitting on my desk waiting for when I get time to install it. Similar to that of Norbie has fitted his MA61.

Cheers.

Okay si it's about $900 for a Torsen. How much is it to get the standard clutch type diff rebuilt? Has anybody had it done or had a quote? As for the wear my still spins both wheels it's just sloppy so I'm looking for a comparison between the cost of the two. BTW my diff has done 270k and it still spins both wheels which I think is pretty good. Where did you get your Torsen from NORBIE????

I had mine fully rebuilt and shimmed for $550 at Hornsby differentials. Works a treat laying double leggers with 265 tyres Smile

And in that time the clutch pack will progressively lose its grip and have some of the nasty draw-backs clutch pack LSD's sometimes have whereas in that whole time the Torsen is just plugging away doing its thing day after day.

Not to mention having to take it out and replace it twice.

Or to put it another way, you can have a superior, BRAND NEW diff for the price of a rebuild!

They are Mk2 Supra specialists. They began a while ago when one of the guys who frequented the Supra groups and Celicasupra.com saw a market for Mk2 Supra parts.
