Hi guys I have the above car and was wondering what mods I can do to the engine exaust etc.

I also seem to be having trouble with the EFI I think occasionaly I seem to get a misfire around the 3,500 rpm mark which can last a few seconds to minutes this happens around town and the open road and doesn't seem to matter if the AC is on or not. does anyone have an idea?

Thanks
Ben

Hey man, does that mean u got same engine as me? 100kw?
Ive never had problems exactly like that.
Does it happen when cornering or just at random?

All i know is that my fuel system is rooted, even with half a tank when i corner, usually above 3500rpm i get fuel cuts and surging but nothing that lasts in the minutes!

Good luck Sad

P.S.
In terms of mods :

Power
K&N replacement filter + cut the crap out of stock air box DIY worked great : heaps less engine bogging down when changing up gears ~$130 for filter

full 2.5" cat back exhaust set me back about $500 and in conjunction with intake the difference was so good that i fried my clutch so i still don't know how much power ive got!

Handling
Definately get super low performance springs, its the single best thing ive ever done to mine. ~$400

Rear sway is the way to go for FWD for really fun cornering, it basically makes the back end step out so you are oversteering!
~$160

Hope that helped Smile

I've got that engine in my AE82 and the following mods:
-Shaved Head
-Port and Polish
-Race Cams
-Cut underside of airbox
- 4-2-1 extractors, 2.5" piping, high flow cat, 3" muffler
-Top gun leads
-NGK plugs

and it made a big difference to power Smile

Hey Ozzie, how much did shaved, ported and polished head work cost you? and aswell as the extractors? Thinking of doing these types of mods.
Thanks

You won't be doing yourself, your car or your dampers any favours if you get superlows. Adjustable rear anti-roll bar is the best value for money handling upgrade you can do (<$200). Then replace worn springs with standard height or lower ones (<$300) then replace worn dampers with decent jap units (<$300/axle).

The 4A manifold is pretty good. New extractors will give you an increase in performance, but not enough for the amount you'll pay for them (>$400).
Stick to the cat-back, better air filter and 3" intake to begin with for good value for money (<$500).

Changing to a different (softer) compound brake pad will prevent brake fade on mountain cruises and are cheap (<$250). Slotted rotors will give a slightly higher temp range, but once again, at a high cost (>$500).

I've spent about 2k on mine upgrading it from the previous owners (young mother) shopping car to a reliable track car (including slicks, not including fluids, replacement parts).

The best thing you can do for an old 4A is a full service (especially if you just bought the car).
Replace any worn gaskets,leads,o-rings,belts,plugs.
Drain radiator, remove radiator from car and flush.
Clean injectors.
Bleed/replace all fluids:
Engine
Transmission
Clutch
Brakes
Power steering

yep that's the one. ti doesn't misfire or surge for minutes it's probably around the 15-20 second mark but normally goes away if I downshift from say 5th gear to 4th than go straight back to 5th as it mainly happens on the open road. I'm replacing the coil lead this week I think it might be that otherwise I might have to get the EFI looked at. It's a shame coz when the car is going fine it goes really well.

I'm thinking of getting the enigne reconditioned as the car has done over 220,000kms I have just put a new clutch in 20,000k's ago and I was also thinkink about getting the EFI serviced than I will look at getting more power out of it thanks guys for your help I was unaware of how popular these cars are.

Do local mechanincs do that kind of work for sway bars and that sought of thing is that more the suspension specialist.

Do your suspension yourself. Buy a set of spring clamps from supershit for $20 -> $30.

check the usual as far as that miss goes (plugs, leads etc) I'd be sorting that out before worrying about mods.

2.5" piping is overkill on a 1.6L.... big time...

Hi guys have had the misfire fixed it was a burnt contact on the distributor cap and I got some platnium plugs and all is well goes really well now.

I have one question i'm looking for an K&N air filter for the car but have no idea on what product number I need for it. I think I need 33-2041-1 but not sure could anyone help me and ist easy to install myself as I'm all that mechanicly minded.
