I've thrashed my 5m-ge (regularly hitting the limiter) since i got it at 218,000km. It is now 233,000km old, and the head gasket is still fine, FYI having never been replaced.

For trivia's sake, we do regular head gasket jobs on mum falcons at work, most around the 120,000km mark.

ive seen plenty of 5m's with BHG's, and usually with poor head bolt tension...

nowhere near as regular as 7ms (i suspect the 5m comp ratio and cam profile, increasing age and leakdown - as well as the fact people dont 'expect them' to go as well as a 7m 'should' - help deter detonation and crazy cyl temps and pressures)

checking the head bolt torque is an easy and effective thing to do on any engine tho Smile

cheers
ed

um, yes, if its the white one shinny i've seen you, um, drive it.

ed - agree - cheap insurance.

nods to the fowlcoon headgasket woes....i think the fords have more issues with headgaskets than the 7M's do!!!!!!!!!

totally different engines, similar block design but thats about it.
I think the main thing to worry about on the 5M's are the appalling oilway designs in the head.. far more likely to kill your engine than a bhg.
