Some people a few years ago did it in two days but I have no idea how much they stopped.

If you can get someone else to drive with you so you don't do crazy stints and lose concentration and die, you should be able to do it in two days. Getting across the nullaboar is doable in an evening-night-morning marathon so its nice and cool. About 10 years ago five of us in the family drove from perth to townsville in a little colt. That took a week with stopping in various places.

my Hema touring maps book says it's 2696 Km- taking the shortest route on sealed, major roads.

how to do it? there's the sensible way, otherwise, you get "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" out from your local council library and use it like an instruction manual Wink

I recently drove Melbourne to Perth, so naturally did Adelaide in there too. Car was a 2001 Mitsi Lancer, that didn't miss a beat. I'd recommend Perth to Balladonia in day one (800Km), staying at the Balladonia Roadhouse - it will be the best accomodation you have on the Nullabor. Day two would be Balladonia to Ceduna (850Km), staying at the beachside motel which has excellent security and adequate rooms. Day three would be Ceduna to Adelaide (650Km).

This does not take into account much "sightseeing" time, which I'd also thoroughly recommend too, hence 3-6 days to drive it easily and see the sights.

Car wise, renew your cooling system - new coolant, check all your rubber hoses and alloy outlets, and get your aircon working if you have it - it will be money well spent especially given your Summer timetable. your car will do it, if it does Perth summer without dramas, all the roads you'll used will be sealed too.

If you want any more info, ask, or search out a couple of threads I authored in the SA section of Toymods around September, 2003

i will have to think about it will prob be only doing that sometime in june so the air cond thing wont be a problem cause my car's got no a/c

i guess it prob cheaper flying there with virginblue.. Smile

It will definately be cheaper to fly, not only with Virginblue or Quantas, but also Quantas' new budget carrier. Not including time, you'll spend about the same on fuel as airfare, as fuel cost over the Nullabor are around $1.30-40/L and you'll be paying high prices from Southern Cross to Port Augusta.

Having said all that - it's an excellent drive!

a few weeks ago we drove from ceduna to kalgoorlie in a day (think its about 1400km or so) and we got into kalgoorlie at about 3.30pm so we could have made perth easy. 2 days is very doable, but only if you have 1 or 2 other drivers, it would be next to impossible on your own.

Freak when i left Darwin on my way back to Perth i did Darwin to Derby in the 1st day. 1700k's or something it was. drove myself as the missus couldnt drive stick.
i was going to stop at Fitzroy crossing, but the locals looked a bit hostile.. http://forums.toymods.org.au/images/smiley_icons/icon_eek.gif so i kept going till i got to Derby.
