lifter pump from a wrecked car?

thought I could save some money by getting a low pressure pre-pump for my surge tank. Its a 2tgeu, with high pressure pump in place and regulator at fuel rail. So anyone know what cars had an external pump I could graft into my setup?

Pre-Liberty EFI Subarus had an external high flow pump (Leone, Vortex, + VL commodores, XF Falcons)
If you're only after a lift pump for your surge tank, pretty much any external electric fuel pump to suit a carby engine should work. They are self priming & if they've only got to fill the surge tank should supply enough flow.
when does your EFI pump turn on?
ie does it start pump when you turn the ignition to "on" or when you turn the ignition to "start".
If it comes on with "start", then wire up the pre-pump the pre-pump with the ignition "on".
When you go to start the car, turn the ignition to "on" for a couple of seconds to make sure the surge tank is "primed".

thanks guys. The pre-pump will share the power to the high pressure pump. Which is run from a relay via ECU. So it will turn on from On position I'm guessing.

Is it the factory ECU?
If so, it will probably only turn on the EFI pump from the "Start" position, not the "on" position.
The computer may also vary voltage to the pump to make it flow differently as engine speed goes up or down.
You don't want this for your lifter pump.
Does you surge tank have an overflow back to the fuel tank?
Wire up your lifter pump direct from ignition "on" via a relay & prime it like I suggested.

yes it is stock ECU. the fuel rail has a rising rate regulator on it. So no variation on the voltage. I spoke to someone at the toyo wreckers who did the engine swap and he suggested I leach the power from the high pressure pump line. Why would I want to be priming it? The surge tank will always be full. it has two fittings at present. But I am going to install another 2.
top: inlet FROM pre-pump
top: return FROM fuel rail
top: return TO main tank
bottom: outlet to main Pump.

If an EFI pump sucks air, even once, it will cause it to fail. Maybe not immediately, but it will start the process.
Priming it, if only for a second or 2, ensures that the surge tank has some fuel.
It should still have fuel from last time you run, but fuel evaporates when heated, so it could move around the system, so you just never know & it gives peace of mind that the EFI pump won't be sucking air.
also gives you a chance to refill the surge tank if you've drained the fuel system for some reason (you can always do a temp wire up to reprime the system).
This is the way I'd do it personally, if you've got better advice to do it your way, & you're comfortable with that, go for it.
If it works all the time, let me know, I might change my thinking.

hmm. got me thinking how much I trust that there will be fuel left in the system. Will consult a speciallist. Thanks for your help wagonist.
btw. wagons Rock. Theres something that just sits right with that long back. Even my TP Magna had it. However this doesn't extend to the Camry wagon. must have a steep straight rear edge.
