Okay all the guru out there
just say i want to keep the original AE86 dash. But the engine im implanting in use electrical signal for both the speedo and tacho. Is there like a converter that i can use......cause i really don't want to change it to a digital dash...i personally think it kinda gay...

need more information, what is the halfcut? the speed signal is sent from the gearbow, u need to pull the sender out and put the mechanical one in from your old box, this isnt very difficult at all

ive just been researching this, you can buy a VDO elec speedo for around $250 (300Kmh 10cm face) which is self calibrating and you can use multiple input sequences for various diff and wheel diameter configurations when you chop and change around.
speedo is traditional face not 7 seg display as well.

Sounds good. But wouldn't the ECU be looking for an electronic speed signal from the gearbox and be unhappy?
Cheers,

you can buy a sender for it or adapt one to suit like off a 1j or 2j boxok

Or you could always keep the original speedo cable etc. and have a pulse generator fitted to the cable in order to keep the ECU happy. What engine are you using, does it require an accurate speedo signal (i.e. for auto trans control), or basically a 'vehicle is not moving' one for idle control etc.?

Sorry for the thread (partial) hijack, but this info is just too good to pass up on
I'm puting a JZX90 Chaser and autobox into an '84 Supra. The Supra dash will want a mechanical signal from the box (I could fit a mech. sender off a W58 or similar), but the ECU will be wanting an electronic signal to control the autobox.
So is a pulse generator an electronic sender that could be hooked up in addition to the mech sender? If so, that sounds like the way to go for me. Where do I get one and how would I calibrate it?
Many thanks!

Hit the yellow pages (or similiar!), and find a place that does speedo calibrations etc. These people also do exciting jobs like fitting taxi meters etc., therefore usually can find something that will satisfy what you want. Sorry to say, I can't suggest anyone in Sydney that does this kind of stuff

Another option I've been thinking about is keeping the JZ electric sender in place and finding a way to translate this to a mech signal to work the dash.
As a last resort, I'll fit an RSM (and watch RWKW figures instead of the road ) to take the electric signal. But that'd be kinda ugly hanging off the dash. And being an old digi dash (with inverted 'L' tacho) style, I can't easily replace the tacho with a neat electric swap .
I called Guageworks (Melbourne?)a few months ago about this - but they couldn't do much without seeing it. And I'm in Perth.

The conversion im doing is 3sge Altezza engine into AE86. I know Bill Sherwood did this conversion using the Altezza speedo. But i really want to keep the AE86 stock appearence as possible

Celia-Sue - why do you need to replace your tacho??? Use the old school bar graph one you've got!
