Mandrel Exhuasts and Cats

My trubo setup starts getting installed over the next month and I'm just trying to sort out the exhuast at the moment. I was hoping to do a 3" mandrel exhuast, but am not sure if it's going to be worth the extra cost. So just a couple of questions.
1.Do you's think the 3" mandrel exhuast would be worth it? of just go 3" press bend, with maybe mandrel on the couple of tight bends?
2.How hard is it to do it yourself, I can borrow a MIG welder off a mate and I prepared to take a whole weekend if necceasary?
3.What's the best cheapest 3" Cat to get? (secound hand from jap import maybe?)
4.Last one, will the turbo and cat be enough to silence the exhuast enough legally, or will a small muffler be needed too??

With a mig and a weekend no dramas, you obviously wont have to put it up on ramps
You may even get away with a side pipe on a 4wd exiting in front of the back wheel! (less bends and better angle of attack/departure for 4wd'n)
Try it with just the cat if thats too loud sick a strait thru muffer on next weekend
Doing your own mandrel bent systems shits alllllll over and wacked together exhaust shop jobie

Having it exit in front of the rear wheels is illegal isn't it?
Not that some things on my truck aren't anyway, but I want to get the turbo conversion approved so do you think they'd approve it with that? sounds like a simple idea, crap all bends having it that way!!
I might do a dodgy do job of hooking the standard exhuast back up to it, get the mod plate, then do the exhuast how I want...

i'd say that in qld you'll need the exhaust exiting after the rear wheels, after any windows and probably even out the back.
get a muffler place to build you one to suit - mine is 2 3/4 inch from dump pipe back - made out of press bends- has flange before the hump over the diff and flange after the dump pipe..
you might find they have a pre-bent (sub 3") exhaust system that can be joined to the dump pipe with a flange - then remove the end muffler and weld on a lukey turbo muffler or similar so your legal but still not chockingthe exhaust.
you will probably need cat and turbo muffler to be quiet enuf.
anything useful at <www.transport.qld.gov.au? ?
there's a few PDFs on vehicle modifcations there somewhere...

It will be nowhere near quiet enough without a muffler. Even a 1.6Ltr sounds like a V8 with no muffler.

speak to the engineer doing your mod plate, side pipe maybe able to be included?
as long as it dosent allow fumes in and meets noise requirements i dont think thay would have a problem

I'll have a speak to the engineer and see, it'd certianlly make it heaps easier....
I spoke to Brian at Beaudesert exhaust this week and he said to allow up to $1000 for a 3" mandrel. That was including a 3" cat and muffler and also a flex joint all in mild steel, so at those prices I am deffinetly going to have a go at it myself!!
But is the flex joint really needed on mine, I thought they were only used on deisels and transversly (spelling??) mounted front wheel drive cars...

well my mild 2.5 inch mandrel system cost me ~$250 including muffler, flanges and a weekend.. tho i did grind all the welds back and stuff like that
and a length of stainless steel 3inch flex will set you back $50-$100 from a truck parts place ... suggested if your going over the axle

Where does the flex pipe usally go? Close up to the turbo?
Are the flared joints with a clamp ok to use for the joints to the Cat and Muffler, so they can be removed for when I race, or would it be better to use flanges??

why would you need a flex joint? if your engine mounts are stuffed maybe? and there's not enough mounts on the actual exhaust system?
story: i've got a mandrel bent 3" system stored under my house, came of a 1G-GTE RA40 celica, it includes a bend going over the diff....
as long and you brace the turbo and.or dump pipe so all the weight's not hanging off the manifold bolts, and there's enough of those -big-black-rubber-band-thingos holding the system in place, everything need only bolt up.
use flanges not flare joints- the clamps and faces become flogged out very quickly, they're a PITA to work on and they're prone to leaking if you;re constantly re-tightening the joint.
if you've done the flanges square to each other, just smear both side with exhaust sealing putty (maniseal) before bolting up tight.
