do all the high end ECUs (autronic, motec, etc) have inbuilt igniters?
I'm assuming so since the entry-level microtech does, but wanted to make sure before ditching my last 1jz igniter

The Autronic SMC doesn't. I also had a Haltech E6-S which didn't.

haltech's send a signal to ignitor - they sell one of their own - which is probably a re-branded borsh unit

this way your ECU doesn't have to electrically nasty stuff like current limiting, switching, multi-spark and dwell control.

plus if some goon at the workshop shorts out all your coils while they're hot you only take out the ignitor, not the whole ECU.

the MoTeC site lists a number of ignitors in their tech section, so i would be assuming that they do not have internal ignitor...

makes sense as the current thru an ignitor is around 5A, whereas each injector is only about 1A, so less noise...

i'm pretty sure wolf isn't internal either....

heh heh, i'm sure i can find some space to 'store' some ignitors for you Very Happy. possibly on my car?

the only ecu that has inbuilt igniters is the LTX microtech, all the other ecus require a igniter to be used, weather you use a factory or aftermarket (m&w) its your choice,

Also, to run some of these ingitors,(Bosch 0277100###) the ECU needs internal dwell, otherwise they still won't work... average price is around $200+ depending which one needed.

with the LT microtechs you have the choice of using a dumb or internal dwell igniter with the press of a button!

nmmm
but the "big poloshed turd" has better tuning options

Don't get me wrong, I love my microtech, and for $1000 it was a good deal. but if I had've had the extra thousand or 2, I'd go something else

you would expect for 3 times the price it has more options that why it costs so much more, for a street car 90% of people wouldnt use a motec to 50% of it capability which makes them a little pricy for a street car,

the new range of microtechs will have all the tuning options of the top range ecus for a hell of a lot less money, hopefully we will see them in a few weeks time.

the LT/LTX12s should be ready in a few weeks, the LT/LTX8s will be another month or so, then the LT/LTX16s will be about 5 months away, all the new range feature 32bit processors, surface mount main boards no more dry solder joints etc. all looms will be the same so you just cut off the wires you dont need, all ecu's will be dealer programable, no more sending ecu's back to get reconfigured etc, all ecus will still be handset or laptop programmable so they are compatable with all your current stuff, for the first 6 months or so the LT/LTX 8s and 12s will use the same looms as the current units so that gives people that wish to upgrade the chance to do so with out rewiring there car, after this time there will be a new loom, the new cases are half the size of the old ones, the LTX8s is around the size of a ciggi case or MT4 for those who know what size they are.

the 8 and 12 have user definable load points for both rpm and map/tps, user definable injector MS, save maps to disk, more outputs, closed loop boost control, and im pretty sure closed loop cruse but i will have to check on that one.

the LT16 will have 8 injector drivers, 8 ign drivers, 16 channel data logger (basically you can log everything including wheel speed, steering angle, throttle position, brake pressure etc)

the new turbo timers are done, they are full solid state no more relays like the old ones and some of the jap ones, i have one of these for my car and they look trick with the same casing as the ecu's with carbon front panel and bright blue LED's these are $160

the new wide band will be avaliable soon it is a lot faster than the old units with programmable outputs etc on it,

the new dash unit will be avaliable soon, it features a 4 line screen and is a little bigger to make it eaiser to read,

also trying to get them to make a egt display in the same style as the current air fuel meters,

i have some on order already so when i get one in my hands ill let everyone know exactly what they can do.

hmm... The only things that Motech do offer is,and very well, is FEEDBACK!! If your into full on racing sure Motech are the way to go with the amount of extra inputs, outputs , real time data logging, etc that is need for a full on race/rally car... That's why I have one fitted to my New Rally car. For general street cars, Mircotech are great, the New EMS stringer are also good and very user friendly, That's why I've got a EMS in my Girl's car and a Microtech in another car I run for club events (motorkhana,s/sprints), don't need the bulls*$t, just want it to run!
