any ideas? the car just lurches foward. i think i need a looong breaker...
any quick ideas? i thought maybe bracing the breaker against the chassie rails and starting the car? this would probably damage the rails yes?
HELP!!! (i thought this was gonna be quick haha)

as long as you have a decent socket-and-tbar wedged in a strong steel tube and then tube wedged against chasis rail, crank engine? but bit of wood between rail & bar if worried.
or remove starter, wedge bit fat screwdriver in starter-ring teeth somehow, use braker bar... if needed, purchase new flywheel afterwards.

apparently using a big breaker braced against the chassis then turning the engine over works a charm
I need to do it myself soon, and that's the approach I plan to use
to stop car lurching forward, put car in neutral

rattle gun - like ed said
um before u try the crank idea - disconnect spark - DO NOT START the car. and stand well back in case it goes wrong.
not a great fan of that method.

No it shouldn't damage the rails.
If you are concerened then brace it against the ground.
Starter method works a treat for me.

I tried EVERYTHING to get my crank pulley off, short of using a rattle gun (which I don't have access to), and the stupid thing wouldn't budge. I didn't like the idea of using the starter method but I was desperate so I gave it a shot. Breaker bar with a pipe on the end wedged against the ground, make sure the engine can't start, and turn the key for half a second. The bloody thing popped off first go! Couldn't be easier. I'm a big fan of this method now.

Do any motors actually turn the way that would make them tighten to bolt? or do all motors rotate in the same direction?

Ive heard people say some hondas turn the opposite way. Whether thats true, or just the usual honda hating toyota guys, your guess is as good as mine.

Yes, most Honda engines turn in the opposite direction to the norm, but not all!

hi guys thanks for the replies i got it off shortly after i posted the question...
here is how i did it
with a piece of 90 x 50mm hardwood i cut out a groove in the middle of one end in a 'U' shape large enough to fit a spanner inside.
then putting the spanner on the bolt and the wood on top of the spanner i got out the lump hammer (like the yellow handled one above) and belted the bit of wood while my dad held a breaker bar wedged in the pulley itself.
worked first go

sounds good
my first method of attack will be a breaker bar, a long length of pipe, and much swearing.
I also have a sledge hammer, which always helps

you've still gotta put it back on correctly, which i guess is even more important then removal.
make a "strap wrench" with an old belt & piece of wood & nails. it's self tightening and the wood can be any length for leverage or resting against the frame or floor/ground.

If you can get someone else to give you a hand, just put the car in the highest gear possible, and get them to stand hard on the brake. Then just grab a breaker bar (pref at least 50cm) and use some of 'dem manly muscles. It comes off in half a second.

A lot of the time the clutch will just slip if you do that.
Its happened to me before
We ended up having to get a guy with a rattle gun to come out and take it off

That's interesting, I've never seen the clutch slip doing that -
Even on a crankshaft nut that a rattle gun couldn't take off (it was silastik-ed on as well as torqued to buggery!)

Oh, and it was a brand new clutch + pressure plate, about 4 months old. So it wasnt a worn clutch

Well, it was only a CA18-DE, and we used a CA16-DE clutch, so it couldn't be too far from what was required

when u put it back on, dont just grab a big bar and hang off the prick to tighten it, actually torque it up correctly, snapped crank bolts suck

dont try and turn the engine over whilst you're holding a breaker bar against it! Unless you want mangled hands and broken wrists? use a very big screwdriver to wedge between a part either side of the balancer. And have a breaker bar. its a 2 man job. Then you need to go to supercheap and buy a harmonic balancer remover tool. $25 mine cost me. Make sure you work the thread on them before trying to use it though...they crossthread quite easily.

I had the same clutch-slipping problem when I tried to take my pulley bolt off, and once again this was with a brand new heavy-duty Mk4 Supra clutch! I think some of you might be surprised to learn that some Toyota engines (eg JZ series) have the pulley bolt torqued up to a ridiculous figure... over 300 NM actually!

my solution for getting the crank bolt off
1 40cm breaker bar
1 socket
1 Ed_ma61
piece of cake (and anything ed says about injuries sustained doing it is just him being a girl)
