The joys of remotes. Wed, 21 January 2004 11:24 Go to next message
At work the other day and we got a prelude in with the big rear wing and ramp style front bar.All it needed was some neons for the full rice effect.
Anyway the car gets parked waiting for a service when eventually one of the mechanics goes out with the keys and pushes the button on the remote to unlock it.
Unfortunatly he manages to push the button to start the car as well which has been left in gear and it promptly lurches forward and fires into life so it is driving itself across the car park.
He runs after it trying to stop it but he didn't get there in time and it drives itself into the building destroying the front bar.
Now work is paying for the damage to the car but it was real hard not to laugh at the time. And no it wasn't me.

did he not leave a car with remote start in gear? shouldn't that be in the alarms manual to NOT be done? Not very clever. Should be forking out for it himself !

If the business refuses to fix the car I would imagine that the damage done to the business's name would be greater than the money they would fork out to fix the bumper. They may not HAVE to do the repairs but imagine the number of people this guy is going to tell this story to. Confused

query: do newer manual cars have a neutral switch? otherwise, how is alarm to know if is gear (is easy with an auto - the start lockout stops this kind of stupidity in its tracks)?

was it in for a handbrake service? with handbrake on, an attempt to take off in 1st should stall a car engine - if the handbrake is properly adjusted.

bloody honda people! throwing hand brakies everwhere and stuffing the park brake! tisk tisk tisk, Laughing

kind of a silly thing to have really, i could see the merit with a turbo car... with the warming up and stuff... but yeah... obviously not a solid investment... Smile

This is 100% correct
The company would win in a court case

However, this is also 100%, and a far worse outcome.

i still dont understand why a car would have been parked in gear without the handbreak on, if it had remote start installed. for manual cars there meant to have a solenoid for 1st gear so it wont start if in gear (still illegal but alot safer) and for auto cars it only starts them in park.

did a mechanic park the car or did the owner, cos if the owner did there pretty fucking stupid.

i have remote star ton my car, and there is a handbrake switch, so if the han dbrake isnt up , you cant start the car. i guess whoever installed his alarm didnt do it properly, and cut annoying little corners (the handbrake switch was a annoying bitch to put in)

If it was manual, I am surprised that it started, and continued to run. Usually they just die......

Lots of people dont put the handbrake on if its on a flat but just leave it in gear. Just an honest mitake I reckon.

Yeah it does sound like someone has cut corners with the alarm system, as you would expect there would be safeguards to stop this from happening.
Why would you want remote ignition anyway, i would have considered it a liabliity, i.e if your keys get stolen

on my car it was a bonus that came with the alarm. i didnt buy the alarm for that specific reason. and it can also be used to stop the engine if someone drives off in your car.

well you got no reply to stoping a car with the keys in the ignition - regardless of the alarm
However I think his point is..he can stop the car if someone hotwires it in the driveway, at the servo anywhere !
Pretty handy. As the majority of all stolen cars are stolen from driveways !

i got the impression from the manual that it is for anti-car jacking, so that you probably can stop the car even if the keys are in the ignition. i haven't tried this out yet, but i probably will now.

But if the keys are in the ignition when you get carjacked, and the remote is attached to the keys, and then the remote is in the car with the car jacker, but as mentioned, it may be useful if you see someone hotwire your car and drive off

Thanks Will for that info. If I ever see your car parked somewhere I will be sure to smash the window and start her up with the little button thingy. Very Happy

i know it was a joke, but you wont get very far with the steering wheel locked. sure the car may start, but you wont be able to steer, and if the keys arent in the ignition after 8 minutes, it will shut down anyway. this alarm is smart Very Happy

what if you get someone to gnaw through the thick mild steel?, then hit the car with an emp that disables the alarm, yet allows the ecu to work?
