I haven't been looking at R/C cars for ages but when I was, a Hitec 2ch controller was about $110 and not very many cars (with engines) were less than $400. If it's never been used you would not be getting ripped off but it also doesn't sound like the bargain of the year.

I dunno what controller it is then... There are lots of different ones even within the Hitec range. I stated the price for the base model that I bought about 2 years ago. I assume that the price hasn't doubled for the same product in that time... It must be a better one.

I used to have an Electric car... Tamiya Stadium Blitzer. I was pretty young when I bought it and could not afford to keep it running. I then moved to model aeroplanes and found the cost thing was a problem still and sold that. I missed my model car so I was looking into getting another one a little while back.

The TG 10 is a good first gas car, i have one and love it...but to get it up to high (semi racing) standard you need to modify...
Cons - over-steers big time in stock form. Strictly on road, cannot handle even flat dirt.
Pros - Cheap, can handle novice driving and maintenance, beats most other cars in the out of box class (eg kyosho alpha ten), fast, with mods listed below mine easily handles doughies.
Need a tuned pipe (more power), performs like shit otherwise. $50-200ish
Need to soften rear dampers(get a different shock oil) $15ish
Need a failsafe, by default the servos will go to full open throttle when 'hit' with interference, ie mobile phone this causes the car to hurtle of uncontrollably flip of the edge of the basketball court and start a grass fire (not that this has happened to me ). this is apparently a US/japan to Au conversion thing.
There is a widening kit that widens the wheel track - this helps handling majorly...tis $100ish
helps if you have a 2 speed gear box. $100ish

Its not a bad price. If its brand new i'd go for it. But be wary buying second hand stuff if anything. Rc stuff has real wear and tear everywhere. Negligence can mean the loss of alot of screws.
The handling in stock form is ok. Just for everyday driving. Car understeers to right.
As squid said get the Tamiya extended suspension arms. Sway bars and some "take off" slicks. 150 bux ontop and u'd be surprised with the difference.
I started rcing with my tg10. And still do drive it once in a blue moon. Btw its still for sale

wheel controller = good!
I have a good stick and crappy wheel, wheel still wins for me!!
Not sure of the difference, I think I have a mkII but I am not sure and the box is still at my parents. If I recall difference was mostly in what shells they came with...

Actually i have this exact same car you speak of with a different controller, these are pics (I done a engine conversion)
And the new powerplant which RIPS the old engine to shame and back many times over, but you can read about the conversion here: http://www.tamiyanitro.com/bbs/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID= 3247
New engine:
Stock old engine:
The calsonic skyline is what you are obviously getting, and the new engine is a beast, upgrade if possible, its about $140 - 150 its a Force .12, worth it.
The car shits all over the Great Vigor holden/ford, they seem to fall apart easily, and break fuel tanks... (I race 2 mates with them for ages... so i know) and we all got same engine, and me and another have 2 speed gearboxes, cool upgrade)
Thats all i can say, its a perfect beginners car and is MAD fun.
Enjoy

Btw i have a early edition one, out of box it did not come with that air filter, no ball bearings, if yours dont mention ballbearing kit anywhere around the box, or this type of air filter, BUY the ball bearing kit, air filter is not as important, but the ball bearings will make car better.

Not sure about diff with tg10 and tg10mk. But the tg10r is a monster. Tamiya is just about the only brand of rc u can race here without worrying about spare parts. At that price of the force12 i'd go for teh OS motor or a second hand novarossi. Did you use the existing engine mounts? The fs12 is really crappy. Cos it uses a cast alloy heat sink. Very hard to tune to race. It overheats even before u use the fuel. The easiest way is to keep the heatsink clean or to replace with a aluminium heatsink and use very mild fuel. 10% max.
At the moment i'm running a Kyosho v1s with a nova 12 from my tg10. This thing destroys all that it confronts. Funny thing is i prefer the stick 2 channel over the wheel. I grew up with them and i still stay by them. Regardless if there is a faster pcm radio.
i286: Did u find your 2 speed fiddly to tune? especially setting the clutch spring tension?
BTW seeing that no one would want to buy my tg10 as a whole i'm going to sell off bits n pieces.
Message me if u guys need tg10 hopups

my 2 speed was a bitch to tune, it was pretty right when it was first in, then i tried to fix it (not knowing that it was almost ideal), took forever to get it back to the same as what it was!!

2 speed took me 2 hours to tune... the best thing to do i found out is to screw in the spring with screw 10 times, in and out, then adjust to insttructions to howevermany turns out, worked a treat
I had a massive stack the other day and since then im piecing my car to bits, the 2 speed aint working properly, it changes, but my car isnt moving too fast, top speed is 30km/h i reckon lol...
So im doing a full rebuild in about 10 mins.
BTW about the engine mount question: I did use original engine mounts, but as you read my conversion page its all there, requires a bit of fiddling around, need to change fuel tank layout, and etc..

I just bought a TG10 MK.1 not long ago as well!
Just last week got the tuned pipe and 2 speed for it (and yes it was a prick of a thing to tune the 2 speed!), and got the sway bar set for it too. Pretty fast now, handling is still not great tho, it pulls a lot to the right, I can't find the cause of it! I've swapped servos, reciever, transmitter, checked wheel alignment, and i have no idea now.
I am about to order an OS 15 CVRX from tower hobbies, the price comes to approximately $150AUD compared to over $300 here!
Check it out for prices, their shipping is not too expensive either. www.towerhobbies.com

reason why your handling is so buggered. Probably using too weak a shock or your steering arm is bent. due to probbaly stacking it. reset all the manual turns on the turnbuckles and check your servo connection to the steering arm if it is actually on the neutral position. I usually had alot of issues with that. Otherwise its really due to the motor being side mount. Crappy tamiya. easiest way is to get some wheel weights from any tyre shop. And counter balance the car. I think its about 35/50 grams on the top deck. Just above where the battery compartment is.
As for the os 15. It is a direct drop in i heard. along with alot of other Os motors. It is the blue/block. yellow head? corect me if i'm wrong. I have a second hand novarossi cxp/cvp motor. I'd ditch it for $180 if u'r interested.
Tower hobbies isn't bad. If u'r near enough to melbourne try the hobby shops in the inner city. They have everything and can get anything. Except for a 220 1/10 trueno gt apex

i just noticed. On the pictures above. U'r using a standard tamiya pipe on that? Well change the pipe. U'd get so much more power and torque when u change it.
I got a Oem brand header with a speed pipe in the listing of what i hvae up for sale.
Heres a quick run down.
If i posted this up in the wrong spot guys i'm real sorry. Seems like the only rc discussion thread on the forums.
Parts are for tg10 as i can't sell the car due to its supposed extreme price of 600 bux.
Hopups:
Tamiya tg10 (original) 2 speed (heaps of diff cogs available)
Tamiya Upper carbon fibre deck.
Tamiya extended suspension arms
Tamiya oem stabiliser bars
Full bearing set (new 3 sets)
Tamiya fs12 upgraded motor head/sink
Tamiya heavy duty drive shaft.
Tamiya full adjustable suspension complete with 4 shock sets and 8 differant weight shock fluids. With turnbuckle to fine tune springs.
Misc stuff:
Novarossi cv/cxp motor. 40000 rpm 1.6-8 hp (rebuilt 20 hours ago)
Os nova engine mount.
Counter balanced custom upper deck
Custom shock towers better than tg10r.
Generic brand suspension arms (aluminium ionised purple in color)
Os headers
Tamiya tuned pipe
Os speed tuned pipe.
Numerous servo sets (let me know what kinda servo u after)
Futaba controllers U name it i probably have it.
Pillowball extensions.
Duralumium lower deck with counter sunk screws (new) No more bottoming out and buggering up your screws.
A boxed set of every screw u need to build a tg10.
Light weight custom made flywheel.
pinion/spur gears in what flavor u'd like them.
thats just a quickish rundown.
Pm me with whateveru'd need. I wanna get rid of everything.

I'm really going by first come first serve basis. Where are u located in melbourne.
I've got heaps of different pininons. But some of them are a single piece construction. But then u'd be looking at a meshing problem so u'd be needingn a full set of spurs too to match.
Otherwise:
Carbon deck=60 bux
suspension= 75
arms= 50
tuned pipe has to go with hosing and header so i guess 100
drop me a line
0413869843 we'll work from there.
