Testing impedance of spark plug leads Thu, 22 January 2004 21:18 Go to next message
Apparently, it should be about 4000 ohm per foot?

Is this correct? If so, how do I use the digital multimeter to test them? I switched it over to the impedance section, used the 200m? i think it was and unplugged the lead and stuck the meter on it. It came out at 15.9 or something. This was on the longest lead. So I thought 15.9 x 200 = 3180.

The shortest lead was about 1300. Is this bad or good? Am I doing it correctly!? Razz

Thanks fellahs ! Very Happy

put the multimeter on 20k

anything from 5k to 15 k resistance in the lead is ok

usually leads will either be good or open circuit

and if one lead is bad replace them all
the rest will go soon aswell

I have had all leads test fine with resistance, but still have one lead stuffed. Connections etc were all OK and it looked in good order as well. Replaced the lead and the problem went away.

Thanks mate! I tried it in 20k and it showed nothing. It just came up with a 1 which I thought was too high reading for that setting? Sorry I don't know that much about the impedance settings Rolling Eyes

So if it was on the 20k setting it should show up anywhere between 5-15 on the screen? Confused

Yep, thats right. You can test you've got your multimeter right by touching the probs - the readout will go to zero. I actually throw any lead with more than 10k out, but I have alot of leads, so can afford to be judicious.

Ok, so if mine shows a 1, what does this mean? If I touch the probs together, then it shows a 0.00, which is correct. Maybe I'm not getting a good contact in the lead ends? When they aren't touching anything it shows the same, a 1.

Is 4000ohm correct?

And, is it 5 x 20k for the shorter leads and upto 10/15 x 20k for the long lead respectively?

thanks guys, appreciate the help!

ED: Those MSD's expensive? Would they really be worth it on a stocko NA 4 Banga?
