What size wheels should I put on a 14x7 rim?
|

Hey guys, I tried Blakes (aka v8_ma61) supra wheel on my cressida before I brought my set of rims, so I know that 235 will fit ok all around.
I was thinking 215/? on the front and 235/60 on the rear (can't remember exact profiles but they are the ones that are very close to what the car came with, which was 185/70).
Will the car handle better with say 195 on the front and 205 on the rear? Whats the best compromise between handling (sidewall flex is the major contributor to this?) and general rubber on the road (more = better right... ).
Cheers

185/60/14 perfect if its a light car.
basically tyre width = more rubber on the road doesnt not always = better, you have to take in consideration weight per square inch of rubber. if you have a 950 kg car and a 235 wide tyre, you're going to have LESS weight per square inch of rubber on the road then the same car with a 185 tyre

Doesn't the rim itself have a marking that links to the max legal width a tyre can go? 5, 5.5, 6 etc. Not sure exactly how these corelate to actual tyre sizes, but the Tyre and Rim Assoc should be able to help.
I have seen very wide tyres physically fitted to narrow rims, only to have the rims cut the sidewalls when they flexed.
MrRX7 is right with his point - gotta get a balance between adeqaute pressure on the ground (required in the wet), without too much pressure.
Cheers

I would have thought 185's for a 7" rims was too small
I reckon even 205's would be pushing it
Just get whatever tyres give you the same rolling diametre as the originals
There will be a tyre calculator somewhere on the web
And put the same size tyres front and rear, that what you can rotate tyres if you buy rotational tyres

205's on a 7" rim, and you have metal sticking out past the side of the tyre
I cant think of a better way to scratch a rim

I've always wondered this
weight poer sq inch is all well and good - but you need to find a happy medium - there is a reason why lambos have 300 rubber on the back

345s if I remember correctly
And Will, I'd be putting 225's on there, and just work out what ever profile you need to retain the same rollin diametre.
Probably will be 50 series, maybe 60

I'm with CrUZsida, there is a limit to what I'd put, I'd definetly not be putting 265's or something on it. If it were me, I'd be fitting 215's or 225's, something that fits fairly flush with the face of the rim without bulging or being stretched (185's on a 7" rim is bordering on stupid).

thats my queue from JCMF
I have 265's on the back and 245's on the front (on stock rims), hell yes there is some flex but ive never had an issue with traction
I think the happy medium for a supra or cressida would lie in 235 fronts and 245 rears if your looking for serious powah!

I still reckon a GOOD set of 225's will be the most you're likely to need.

Notice I said GOOD? Seriously, any more than that, or possibly 235's for the rear is just going to LOOK fat rather than be better.

Thats not entirely true. I don't know what 7" rim you saw with rim sticking out past the side of the tyre, but from what I know, an average 7" rim is quite ok with 195, you can go as high as 235 (haven't seen or heard 245, not to say it can't happen).
As for the online calculator online.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
this is without a doubt GOLD. helps people understand how the width of a tyre also increases the circumference.

The 7" wide rims on our parts car looked silly with the 205's on them, admittedly Simmons rims exaggerate this, but it still looked like the tyre was stretched over the rim.

see what you mean. Not quite as bad as the orange silvia in the latest Fast Fours (looks ridiculous). It may have been a tyre without the rim protection some of the new ones have aswell.

In tyre catalog's they usually have a recommended size for each tyre, and from memory, the ones I've looked at (mostly performance Bridgestone ones) have recommended 225's for a 7" rim.

Mr Black have you got spacers on the rear wheels or is it just the wider tyres that make your rear wheels look wider than standard.

225/60's on a 14x7 rim work quite well on an MA61, and since your car is a similar weight that's what I'd be going with. 225 is as large as I'd go on a 7" rim; they already bulge out a bit much for my liking.
As for getting power to the ground, with a half-decent set of Yokohama 225's I didn't have any problems getting traction (unless of course I provoked wheelspin). I currently have 205/60's on the back (thanks to a puncture) and rear end is all over the place. Fun in some situations, but I'll be switching to bigger tyres as soon as I can!

Norbie, what are your 205/60R14s? They're thin on the ground and I need some for my MA61 wheels on TA22.
Thanks!

Nankang EX601? They are still available, I'm tossing up between these and Sumitomo HTR200s. How do you find the Nankangs?

Nankangs are pretty ordinary, but not bad for the price (ie dirt cheap). I have them on the back of the Supra at the moment and the thing is all over the place; nowhere near as good as the Yokohamas, but that's to be expected I suppose!
Wilbo: sounds like a good plan.

In 205/60R14 you'll have not-too-many options:
- Nankang EX601
- Yokohama S306
- Sumitomo HTR200
- Caliente
Nankang EX601 is about $110ea. and features an assymetric tread pattern. Their website in Taiwan refers to 'cost effective performance' and 'value' a lot. I don't really know much more than this, but Norbie's said they're not worth much more than their nominal purchase cost.
Yokohama S306 is Yokohama's 'durability/economy' offering, features a symmetrical tread pattern, and in my mind at least represents peace of mind coming branded by a marque I've heard good things about. It's around $120ea, and I think you'd be fooling yourself if you expected it to perform like an A509, A539 or A008.
Sumitomo HTR200 is a symmetrical tread pattern and about $140ea. The Sumitomo brand is a business unit of or has strategic ties with Dunlop rubber, and has a sizeable product portfolio, most of which is not available locally.
Caliente 205/60R14's are available through Bridgestone dealers and are manufactured to the same symmetrical mould/tread pattern as Bridgestone SF340 Eagers. While it employs the same tread pattern the tyre may no longer be identical to the Eager ~ perhaps the 205/60R14 has been dropped from the Eager line up and the design and moulds licenced to a more budget-oriented third party manufacturer. It's $80ea.
What have you found in 225/55R14? This size may be an alternative to 205/60R14 for my TA22, I'd be very keen to see what's available!

FWIW I have A509's in 225/60x14 and they were available about 6 months ago. I'm very impressed with their performance, and they only cost me $110 each!

Yes, A509's are nice. They've been replaced by A539's which aren't bad either. Neither is available in 205/60/R14, which is disappointing. 225/60R14 is great for MA61 but too big for my TA22.
Cheers!

It's interesting to note the A539's aren't available in that size, but there must be a few A509's floating around in warehouses still.

A539's aren't available in 225/60R14? If that's what you mean, then that is interesting (and dissapointing).
A509's were available in 205/60R14's too, but Yokohama told me I'm 12 months too late for a set ~ nil stock available.

Yeah that's what the tyre shop told me. My choice was limited to A509's, Nankangs, or some other brand I hadn't even heard of... and the Yokies were the cheapest! Pretty easy decision.
