18rg rebuild Fri, 23 January 2004 14:05 Go to next message
Its about time to rebuild my old 18rg, the timing chain is as tight as it will go. So....
New timing chain from a 308 right? Any model 308 or are they all the same?
How can i tell how much my internals have been worked once i pop the lid?
Any suggestions what i should do/replace/upgrade once i get into it?
Any advice/tips etc?
Cheers.

Thanks for that Jason.
I most likely will be doing rings, bearings, timing chain and oil pump.
Anything else i should take a look at?

definately get a valve grind done, as they will then do your valve stem seals at the same time,
not sure on the chains, i'll ask my dad soon

if u have a spare $250, get heavier springs and a set of regoround cams, do this b4 u get the valve lash set cause it will fuck it up

Yes, if you change the sump you'll need the matching oil pickup.

the bottom chain is a std 308 chain and the top one is a 152 link nissan unit that u have to shorten, like $30 for the 308 one and about 40 for the other one and $2 for the joiner link

about the chains.

There are good chains and then there are bad chains.

A common practice now is for companies to make the rollers from curled sheet metal. It is hard to see the difference, but you can see small slits in the rollers.
This is bad, occasionally one will fail under the pressure and you can end up with a fairly disasterous timing chain failure.

It is well worth the effort finding chains without split rollers.
Many of the AUS made chains are split, whereas the JAP chains tend to not have split rollers.

bottom timing set is same as the 18RC.
top chain is a 98 link dbl row.
Same top chain for 2TG's.
I believe the 21R timing chain will work. But you would have to count it first to make sure. Here in the states we use a 20R chain or "tall deck" early 22R chain. the 21r should be the same though. Which i think you guys got. The chain guides are re-usable is the grooves aren't to deep.
HTH.

Who is actually gonna do the work for ya. Im sure if you supply enough alchomohol then me and phil can get it done for ya. Try supercheap as they do have the list for a 18rg in there books but not sure what they actually sell.

Robertson Bros in Mayfield can get their hands on pretty much anything for an 18RG. They got all my gear for me as well as doing my head work...
