icon5.gif  GA61 Brake pads. Sat, 24 January 2004 03:45 Go to next message
Hey all,

My GA61's brake pads are almost worn out and i'm looking at replacement pads... What model code should I be looking for? It has front and rear ventilated discs. I would just go down with one pad in hand but the greenstuff pad reseller here in SA apparently doesnt stock any pads, just orders them in from melbourne!

So unless someone can tell me where to go for some good pads which will fit my car (in SA), i'll be needing the help of those who know GA61's! Smile

Thanks

Chris

I have MA61 brakes in the front of my RA28. Not too sure if they are the same as the GA61.

I am using Ferrodo Premiums PNo. DB265. I think they are the same as a late 80's Lite Ace but don't quote me on that.

The Ferrodo's are easy to get and work really well for normal road use. If you plan on any track work, then the geenstuff would be the go, but why go spending all that money on high performance pads that you will rarely get hot enough to work at their best.

Because the road going pads that are on there now have worn down quite fast, and smoke up easily... No harm in having performance brake pads anyway, the quicker I stop, the better my chances are of survival (generally).

I had a quick go at undoing the caliper bolts today, they were too hard to even budge a tiny bit... I hope to be able to get them off soon, what methods can I use?

A big spanner and lots of elbow grease works for me! Actually there should only be one 12mm bolt per caliper and they're usually pretty easy. You don't have to take the complete caliper assembly off (ie the two 14mm bolts) to get at the pads.

Front brakes "should" be the same as the MA61, but I'm pretty sure the rears are different; MA61's have vented rears while GA61's are solid. Speak to JustCallMeFrank, he should know about this.

I wouldn't waste time with anything less than EBC Greenstuff if you plan to drive the car how it should be driven! I went for a spririted drive in the mountains yesterday in my 400hp MA61 and the brakes worked pretty good even when they got uber-hot. The same car with Bendix pads and a tired 6M ran out of brakes very quickly...

My GA61 appears to have ventilated rear discs Smile

If they are the same.. well thats good! Makes life MUCH easier!

I'll take another look at getting the caliper off today, but i'm pretty sure I was going for the right bolts! I've already changed the pads on another car this weekend, an AE92 corolla, that had only one bolt for the caliper. The KE70 corolla I changed the pads on a month or so ago had two bolts per caliper. Oh well, better try again Smile

Ok, bad news.....

I cant for the life of me get the damn front left caliper off, no matter what, the bolts just wont budge!!

Thats nothing though, took a look at the front right caliper... looked a bit funny I thought, then I realised what had happened to it... the bolt (the one that would need to be undone) was snapped in half!! The pads on that side were in pretty good condition for obvious reasons. What to do, what to do Sad

What calipers would work well with the stock discs? Or should I just go for a full front brake job?

Buy some replacement MA61 calipers for the moment and save up for a brake upgrade down the track.

I'm with Norbie, I'd be putting some EBC Greenstuff on the fronts, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for when trying to maximise the effectiveness of the factory brakes.

Ok, sounds like I need to put off some other things for the moment... Damn cars and their ability to break!

Going to call toyota on tuesday for a quote on the calipers.

I wouldn't be ringing Toyota, I'd be calling some wreckers to find some...calling Toyota is likely to cause you more pain than any broken part will in the first place --> Shocked "You want WHAT for them....and thats EACH???" Razz

If your having problems with the MA61 brakes, don't go anywhere near the rear calipers of an XE fairmont. Now that has to be one of the worst engineering brain farts I have ever seen. It took me 2 hours to change a set of pads yesterday.

Yeah, brand new calipers will cost you an arm and a leg. Try getting the complete caliper assembly off (ie the two 14mm bolts) and take it to a shop, they might be able to get the broken bolt out for you. Failing that, go to the wreckers and pick up a new caliper; note that SA63/RA65 calipers are the same so you won't have any problems finding one. RA60 may be the same also but don't quote me on that; check the shape of the pads, there are two variations on A6 cars.

I got a 1G-GE water pump for $165... didnt think it was too bad considering how rare the part would be new.

Looks like i'll be looking around for some help fixing the current caliper... nothing wrong with it really, just the bolt snapped and the boot torn up as a result. I like the idea of a brake shop just fixing the caliper so I can grab a set of greenstuff pads and have a nice large smile on my face as I stop Razz

Driving home tonight I started to hear a strange tapping sound... yay... Time to investigate (and kill the greek dude that had the car before me... wanker put the hotdogs in palce of the muffler and it's fucking annoying!!)
