Externally, small things like oil dipsticks and clutch assemblies on the blowers are tell tale signs. Series 2 engines have a steel hook covered with yellow paint, type dipsticks, and blowers that have a X type pressing on the clutch assemblies. Series 3 engines have a yellow plastic pull ring covering on the dipsticks, and flat faced clutch assemblies for the blowers. Be careful though, cos both are easily swapped or changed!

piston oil squirters are primarily for cooling, and also for lubrication thru the holes/slots in the piston at the oil control ring.
