No idea if you are in the Northern suburbs but Supercheap Preston have foldaway engine hoists for $459. Repco Preston and Bursons in Heidelberg have spring compressors (valve and suspension variants) in stock.

Note that you can hire items like this, which is a cheaper alternative if you only need it for a day or two!

Doh, hare and forbes in syd. But at only $279 for a two ton hoist you could probably ship it down there as well cheaper.

Thanks for the info guys~ Have anyone heard of Herless Machinery House? They are advertising in trading post... "Engine Hoist, 1 tonne fold up type, Australian standard, H/D double acting pump, $229."

Is 1 ton enough if I'm just using it for some conversion for sprinter/celica and maybe my rex later???

almost definately, if your engineweighs more than 500 kilos, then its time to get a different car.

a 4AGE weighs somewhere around 120 kilos, (i know, because i weighed one on bathroom scales to settle a bet with a friend who said it would only be 80 kilos) if there was room, you could lift it into the engien bay.

Herless is the same as hare and forbes in syd. Very good unit, long legs fold up and stores in a footprint about 1 meter x 0.5 meter. Rated to 1 ton, Aust std means it is capable of 2, Ram rated to 8 ton, double actiing pump means it pumps on up and down stroke of handle. Gets my two thumbs up.

Just remember when you fit the wheels (it comes unassembled, flat pack like ikea), to put the bolts in fron the bottom as otherwise the foul the wheels. (obvoius it seems but...)

Has anybody bought cheap spring compressors for macphersons struts (if so how much?). I borrowed some from my friend once but dodgy as..kept slipping off. They'd be a pretty good tool to have presuming they work alright.
