1jz - removing injector?

Is there any way of pulling the cylinder 3 injector out without having to pull the whole fuel rail out?
If not, what is the easiest way to pull the fuel rail out? Do you need to pull the inlet manifold off?
I was thinking of taking the throttle body off and then disconnecting the vacuum plugs and possibly I would be able to get it off then. What do you think?

No.

Take the top half of the intake manifold off. Then you can get to the fuel rail easily. This will open up runners (and they are opportunely positioned so they face slightly upwards ready to catch any stray bolt that might come their way) so be sure to plug them with clean rags to prevent grief.

what he ^^^^^^^ said
although theres A LOT you can do before taking the injectors out.
have you switched injector plugs over to see if the dodgy cyl now fires (and the one you switched the suspect lead onto doesnt fire?)
also get a 5v battery and connect it to the terminals of the injector (without taking it out) and listen for the 'click click' of the injector solenoid opening and closing.
then once youve CONFIRMED its dead (one way or another as above) then go to the hassle of disassembling theintake manifold
cheers

*Ahem*... the two posts above are incorrect.
In the last 2 weeks, I have removed and replaced the injectors in my 1JZ-GTE twice. The only things I removed were the accelerator and kickdown cables. Everything else was done with either my fingers or a ring spanner.
I didn't touch the IACV or loosen the inlet manifold.
Mind you, it helps to have *very* flexible fingers.
All in all, I think it took me 1h 45m to remove the 380cc injectors and install the 440cc ones.

By the way, the first 3 injectors are the easiest to pull out. I could remove and replace those in 30 mins now I reckon. It's the back 3 that are the tough ones.

ok, stand corrected...
BUT you should still check the injector function before trying to rip them all out.

get a long screwdriver and put sharp end onto injector and blunt end onto yr ear
with engine runnin
u should hear it tick
if not get a noid light and see if the injector is gettin a pulse from ecu
if no pulse then the wiring is broken somewhere
the injectors are pulsed in pairs so if one injector has broken wire usually another injector would be down aswell
if only one injector aint workin it could be wiring broken right near injector
another prob could bve just a stuck injector from engine sittin round for months
run an earth to one pin on injector and do tiny zaps with 12v on the other injector
this is like jump startin the injector
while u r zappin get someone to tap injector with a screwdriver of small hammer
this is very common on jap engines for injectors to stick closed

i have checked that there is power going to the plug on the injector that is not firing and it is the same amount of power going to a plug that is firing so I am 99% certain that it is clogged.
Soarer: you saying you didn't pull the whole fuel rail out or not?
I am a newby at this so...how exactly do you pull the injector out of the rail? ie what holds it in?
thanks

I didn't pull the fuel rail out at all. When you remove the electrical connectors and accelerator cables, you will be able to see a long metal plate holding the injectors into the rail (there are 2 separate plates, one for the first 3 injectors, one for the rear 3).There are three 10mm bolts holding the plate over the injectors. Remove the 3 bolts, then you can just pull each injector out at will.

Guys - what a timely thread!
I have a 1J that's been sitting around (not started) for quite a few months and was thinking about pulling the injectors to have them cleaned/flow tested.
Thanks for the info.

they (hills ms) checked the coil packs and they were all good, so they eliminated that.. they were going to try replacing the map themselves, but i couldnt afford an extra hour

Not sure when I'll be in the Earlwood area next, but I know someone with a 1J in the area. I'll see if he's got time for you to test with his.

Speakafreaka: what are the symptoms your 1jz has? Are they similar to mine?
Mine: only runs on 5 cylinders all the time but feels a bit better when the revs go up.
thanks

it missfires terribly when its approaching full boost (~9psi).
i changed the plugs twice trying different combinations over the last few months, and i thought it may be an overfuelling problem from the ECU supplying too much gas, which is the main reason i bought an SAFC.
When they (Hills MS) were tuning it they checked the fuel pressure (ok) coil packs (ok) and sparks (ok). they seemed to think it felt like it was hitting boost cut.. they were gonna try another map sensor but as i said above i just didnt have the cash today.
ive had a little search through google, and it seems others are having the same problem
im hoping its that.. because im running out of ideas.

oh ok, well my problem is definitely different to yours then.
I really hope it is just a clogged injector.
Going to see if I can fix it/get it out now.
Thanks for the help everyone

i do it from the ecu
i did a maz v6 the other day took me 30 mins to get all injectors workin
they were fukin seized big time
