Reshaping brake pads

Finally assembled my calipers today and went to put them on the car and yet again, something doesn't fit. This time it's the brake pads (!!!).
The pads foul on the strut caliper mounting tabs... By the looks of it I'll need to shave or cut off about 3 or 4mm off the BACK of the pad, what's the best way to do this? Is this even safe? Without the support of the back of the pad (which I assume is metal), will the pad material fall apart?
Hmm

how thick is the metal bit? (it is metal btw)
and if you do decide to do it, dont forget the effect on overall width, which might mean you have to adjust the calipers or some such

you are doing the XT130 and hilux conversion aren't you? if so than there is no worries with "modifying" the pads to make them fit. when i used the standard hilux pads from memory all that was required was removal of the stupid disc scraper section. now that i have Mitsubishi GTO pads in there i had to do much more surgery on the bench grinder. remember you are not changing the length of the pad, just allowing some extra backing plate clearance for them to slide right into the caliper. you'll also notice that the amount of pad backing plate you remove is small and that it doesn't even foul as the pads wear, it's only initially when there is lots of pad material...

This is them... And yes dorikin I am doing the XT130 and Landcruiser conversion (slightly different to Hilux, but similar enough). I'm using RX7 pads.
I'll try shaving off a bit of backing plate tomorrow. Don't have a bench grinder, will probably try the file, and if that's too slow and painful might give the dremel or the angle grinder a go (if it still works after going for that swim...)
