I suppose a 1G would be the go - theres a few people around melbourne with these in their hilux's. 7M or 1JZ have been done too, depends how far you want to open your wallet...
As for legality, I really don't know about QLD - call up queensland transport and ask for a list of engineers, then talk to a few of them.
Good luck!

Hey Tank, I have a 253 in my 4x4 hilux. I didnt do the conversion but i know it doesnt need an engineers cert. here in NSW. on the other hand my Land lord's mate has a 2wd one with a 1jz I think a 1g-gte would be the best replace ment esp if yours originally had a 18R, just look at the celica conversions. If you dont want to go turbo most of the holden V8's bolt in pretty easy, you have 2 options for fitment. put new engine mounts on the chassis, or make adapter plates for the block. Mine has the later. The most common engine swap in the 4x4 world for these things now is the holden V6, more power and torque than the V8, and uses less fuel.
If your looking to have a 2wd street ute, go for the 1g.

What do you want pictures of? I think the 1j hilux has cost about $15k or so, $5k for the car and $10k worth of work? maybe more? I'll need to ask about pictures for it, i havent seen it, the ute is in Canberra.

I think Toyospares in Melbourne have done a few 7M hilux conversions, talk to them (03) 97203177
Even if you're not using an M engine, they might be able to offer a few hints

My brother has a 79 sr5 with a holden 308 that is off it's head. It's a 2wd and had to be engineered here in NSW.The motor is out of it at the moment due to painting. The one thing he has had trouble with is g/boxes but you come to expect that from a well worked 308 and only a standard celica 5 speed. It's had a couple of 18rg's in it and a 253 aswell as this 308 that keeps getting more and more wild but the weight over the front is a turn off, something lighter over the front would be the better way to go I think
