Misaligned crank pulley Wed, 28 January 2004 08:58 Go to next message
Hey guys,

The other day i checked my crank pulley bolt on my bigport 4age and it was so loose i could turn it by hand Shocked
anyway could this mean the crank pulley could spin freely there for the timing mark wouldnt be accurate?

also my pulley has another pulley which is loose and spins freely from the other pulley. i cant see anyway to tighten this unless i weld it up.

thanks

There is a key on the crank shaft that stops it from turning independantly
You have prolly murdered the key/keyway by letting it get loose

Lets hope you havent

Take off the crank pulley and inspect the pulley/end of crank for damage
Everything should be PERFECTLY square

if u have rooted the crank u r fucked, u will have to get another crank, another new engine or have the crank fixed $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$ Shocked

what are the other pulleys for, ancillaries or the timing belt.

i dont know jack about 4A's but soem cars have the keyway only in the crank gear and a little dowel in the front of that gear that aligns the balancer, so u may have to get a new balancer, gear and crank and key Shocked Sad

anyone got a pic of a bigport stock crank pulley?

im pretty sure mine isnt a stock pulley so therefore it isnt lining up due to diff key/keyways? Rolling Eyes

if i do convert back to a stock pulley, ill need new pulleys for the alternator and the waterpump, is it easy to convert all 3 back ?

i guess ill have to take the crank pulley off and find out
this might also solve my timing problems

thanks

why would u need to convert all back, apart from maybe different width belts, if they are the same and they line up then maybe only new belts r needed,

sorry, i didnt make myself clear, the balancer doesnt do anything to the timing, only the front belts

my crank pulley has 2pulleys. the front one is tight but the rear one that drives the water pump and alternator is loose as!
i'll try and take a pic later
but anyway the rear pulley doesnt attach to the front pulley in anyway and can spin freely and move backwards and forwards.
im thinking about weld the rear pulley to the front one to keep it tight.

thanks
