I just bought a rebuilt 18RG, the sticker on the front that says what it is is gone, I was hoping it was the original 9.7:1 comp 145hp motor, but it has a yamaha head, no smog gear shit, it just come with solex carbs, on the block just under where the carbs are it reads 18R - 0801913, on the other side of the block it says 11411 - 36340. On the front of the head it says 11111 - 88250. Does anyone know what one this is and what the compression is?

you have bought the original and the best 18RG... with the 145hp from factory. all the gear you have listed is stock 18RG... i myself believe i have an 18RGU (the same but with smog/pollutant crap on it) but i dont know what the smog stuff is or whether or not its there??
if it is there i want to remove it for added hp!!! that would go well with the twin webers

I found this info somewhere,
- 18RG dohc, 9.7:1 compression ratio, Toyota cylinder head, no smog hardware and developed 140hp. Very rare and desirable. - 18RGR dohc 9.2:1 compression, Toyota head, air injection and EGR. Rated at 130hp. - 18RGRU dohc Yamaha head, 9.2:1 compression, air injection and other smog gear. 125hp - 18RGU dohc Yamaha head, 9.2:1 comp, non rebuildable carburetors, smog hardware and a throwaway electronic ignition. This 120hp engine appears to be the most frequently encountered. - 18RGEU dohc Yamaha head, 8.7:1 comp, smog gear, and electronic fuel injection. Said to make 120hp.
Going by this i would say mine is the 18RGRU, theres just bolts filling in the holes under the exhaust ports where the air injection once was, its a yamaha head, original 18rg didnt have a yamaha head.

I have also been wondering this recently myself, im quite certain mine is a genuine 18rg with the higher compression and toyota head; the ozone killer(total pollution) as i like to call it. I was wondering what the coding is to tell which 18rg/u it is???

There is a 18RG car in my workshop now, with 11111-88231 head. So I would have thought the 88250 was a later model with lower compression. Either way it makes little difference. The pistons may have been changed, and any air injection or EGR it once had would have been removed long ago. What does matter is the results from your comression test. If you are keen, get the starter on it and crank to check compression. If the engine has been sitting around, the carbies probably need to be pulled off, checked out, and re-sealed.

Did any 18rg's have flat top pistons? Mine look flat but this was looking through the spark plug hole.
