go to supercheap and buy generic relay (5 bucks or so), or go to a wrecker and get a headlight or similar relay.
try to get the ones that have the "switch" symbol (for the pins you use for running the fan) and the "coil" or "resistor box type thing" symbol (these pins are where you run your switching wire) look for a relay that only has 4 pins, or 3, the 3 pinners use a common earth, get the simplest relay you can.
sorry if this seems condescending at all, but i know it took me a while to work out how relays work. i'm sure i will have problems hookingup my thermo fans.
good luck!

blake, a standard relay uses these numbers - plus i'm assuming your using a thermo switch that has one wire on the back.
85 & 86 are the coil that drives the relay - one of them can be earthed, the other gets 12V. Seeing as a normal thermo switch provides a ground when triggered, i would wire it up as :
85 - from IGN 12v+
86 - to thermo switch
if you want to override the thermo switch, you run a second wire from 86 to a switch in the cabin, one side of switch gets wire, the other goes to ground.
It's important that you remember that your trigger is coming from the earth connection, not 12V+.
if your thermo switch has two wires, one gets connected to pin 86, the other is grounded.
The coil side of the relay uses minimal current so you won't need heavy-duty wires.
To joice the actual fans, get 12V from the battery or main power rail (usually from large cable from alternator) and via the fuse, connect it to pin 30.
power to the fans then comes from pin 87 (there's sometimes two of them so you can 'power-up' multiple wires). I run two wires to each fan (12+ and earth) so the earth from the fans comes back up to an easy to access spot (e.g. next to the relay).
you could also connect a low-wattage pilot light to a wire coming off pin87 for an idiot light in the cabin.
for this 'triggered' side of the relay use decent weight wires (except for the pilot lite).
this help?

ok ok here is my current situation:
I own 3 thermo fan switches.
First one in the car, didnt turn on the fans - let the car get over half and it didnt switch on - turned off car and conceeded it didnt work. Tested continuity from the terminal in the switch to the outside of the switch...there was none.
2/3rd switches - tested for continuity as above...they were linked. these ones turned on the fans as soon as they were plugged in. The car was cooled down at this point.
I have it wired as such:
gnd wire
thermo switch wire
fan -
battery +
Fan + were siamesed on the same wire that went from the battery to the relay.
What the hell is happening?? Its surely not possible that all 3 of my switches are rooted?!!!
SOMEONE HELP ME!

to makes sure youre termostatic switches are working properly, dangle them in a pot of water on the stove, multimeter attached.
with a thermometer, heat the water up and see where the switches turns on (if at all).
you MAY have 3 rooted switches.
i understand that if theyre rooted they come on automatically (tho my one doesnt!).
check them, and bin them if they dont work.
also check the switching function of ALL relays and other switches, and check your earths.
also, if you have 2 fans, might i suggest wiring up an independant circuit for each (failsafe against a relay or earth fucking out - and your engine overheating).
PLUS - put in an override switch on the dash
cheers

Something worth mentioning is the fact that a lot of 4 pin relays have a '87a' pin and not a '87' pin
Check to see if you have this type of relay.
the 87a pin is a Normally Closed contact. ie when you power the relay, the contacts are pulled open and obviously no current will flow.

what im saying is that the one that was rooted didnt come on AT ALL. I.e being hot in 110" water on a stove, or automatically when on the car..
Mine is an 87 pin gabe

but surely theres a reason they're doing this, its impossible they all could be rooted!
IM lookinf towards wiring errors, but i cant see how theyd be wrong, as its the only way they relay can turn on

Remove the thermatic switch and join the wires together.
If the relay pulls in then the coil side of the relay is fine (except for the thermatic switch possibly)
With the relay pulled in, make sure there is voltage at the fans.
If there is voltage at the fans, or they turn on, then substitute a WORKING thermatic switch back into the circuit

thanks mate!
Yeah i spoke to allan, he has the same setup - it needs to be a 5 pin relay. I also checked a diagram that was sent to me about how to wire them up...its a 5 pin!
Dont have any of them spare do you? Ive got a 4 pin ill swap ya
