SO when you use the key it unlocks but you still can't open it with the handle?
If so, i would think that somehow the handle has disconnected itself from the latch? just a guess though 
I think it would be quite difficult if not impossible to get the door trim off with the door closed.

That's correct, I can see the lock flicking backwards and fowards but when you pull on either handle, nothing happens.

Right on there. There is a $2 plastic clip that holds the rod to the handle, it had broken and the rod had fallen out.
I managed to open the door by fluke when I wound down the window; it hit the rod and opened the door. It bent the rod though. So much so that when I pulled it back into place it broke.
Managed to macguyver it all together with some wire so I can use it for now. Lucky its under warranty so I'll have to see what they say.
