This Mechanic told me the Exhaust size on my 4age is to big before i got it, asked muffler places they said 2inch is amp. Is this true that it is too big?

2" would be fine on a 4age.
why did he tell you its too big? is it affecting the drivability of the car?
what car is it in?

hearing the noise is caused by the exhaust, but the noise is not caused by the exhaust.

what de_rift said. The exhaust wont cause backfires...that could be any number of issues. Anyone familiar with common probs on a seca?

mine does it too, but only when you back off the accelerator. i think its because of the change in pressure

backfires through the exhaust are due to over rich mixture being ignited in the exhaust. when you lift off, the mixture must go very rich relative to the amount of air, and the start popping.
it can also be caused by a cylinder miss, causing the fresh unburnt charge to hit the hot exhaust...
2" is not too big. depend son the mods... 2" is about ideal for a worked 1.3L, but it's all to do with air flow a 1.3L at 8000rpm will push as much air as a 1.6 at 6500rpm.
if you have shitty mufflers, it will "sound too big" ie like a gemini . maybe thats what they were referring to?

I got a Running Rich problem at the moment thats prob cos of them popping sounds. Yeh i dont think 2 inch is too big for my car, does it gain a lil bit of power from this size of exhaust?

2" is fine. are you running a cannon? he is most likely reffering to your muffler.. cannons are known todo this. backfiring and flaming. but dont worry much about it
rich is good just aslong as its not lean!
factory is 1.5" and dont down grade you will feel a restriction and a flat spot!

I know the sound your talking about, its not actully back fireing but yer that sound thats like that.
Come on guys, a big exhaust is good but you have to remember its only a 1.6L engine.
I've been told to get a 2" for my 2.4L.

For an NA 4ag go to 2 1/4 inch max... 2 1/2 inch is too big... IMO 2 inch is too small for a worked 4ag. Just my 2Cents...

running rich = more fuel shouldnt give you performance problems!
dont you think that more fuel = more power?
some of it might be a waste but dont you feel your car more responsive?

Usually it will backfire if you have had your foot flat to the floor (running full rich mixture) then when you let off it backfires a little. At least thats how mine is.

i stopped it on mine by adjusting the mixture a bit. 2" sounds beautiful, thats what the cop was trying to tell me the other night. He said "your car is too loud" but he was trying to say "Damn that sounds nice"

yeah I did but I was changing the fuel filter (in a bitch of a spot they are) and I pulled my air filter off to get to it, the hose is split all along the bottom so I have a few things to fix. Stupid ford piping

it is again... stupid thing. I guess it needs a bit of work. I really noticed the performance loss... hell I still do. Right now it makes the camry lok like a beast (till you get past 3500 rpm)

Yeap same as my car. Performance loss can be from a blocked up CAT, running rich for a while can cause this. My car, when it idles at normal temp makes a popping sound here and there apparently that sound is from a blocked up cat.
I am sure my car has a blocked up cat cos been running rich for a while now 4 5 months.
AND YES A SWIFT GTI WAS ABLE TO KEEP UP TO ME proves the performance loss

nah thats not to big at all, if you want you could even go up to 2 1/4" that would be the max thought, i know when i get cars coming in that backfire it is usually due to poor tune or a small exhaust leak
