kinda weird auto box or diff? issues. Sun, 01 February 2004 02:58 Go to next message
Im having some weird experiences with my auto box in the ma70 atm. It is clunking when i am pulled up and change gears, like r to d. It drives around brilliantly and changes both up and down with ease and no clunking. Or could it be the backlash in the diff???

check the gearbox mount/s.

put it in nuetral and wiggle the tailshaft with wheels on the ground..... should tell you if diff is loose.

could it be internal backlash in the box?? how would you check on an auto?? hmmmm

take to auto-trans shop and then bend over for some serious cash-extraction.... or

.. there might be some notes 'out there' about about adjusting them gearboxes (limited to gaps between solenoids/plungers and bands).

tried the electric transmission articles on <http://www.autoshop101.com/autoshop15.html> ?

can you get under it and identify the model of gearbox? the 1G-GTE uses an A340E gearbox - but your 7M might have improved hardware behind it.

am at a loss here - fluid level OK?

otherwise, google i think might helpful ... the autoshop PDFs that i have locally don't talk about diagnosing mechanical faults like 'clunks' ... ;(

Hey V8 MA61 - Did you solve his problem of clunking into P or reverse. A friends corolla jolts going into reverse but drives really well? Wondering if you solved your problem?

clunking here too.

My a340e transmission is shocking when i go from P to R. It shakes the whole car as if you were hit up the ass from another car. It's very worrying. It also does it when i go to D but not much.

This shouldn't be happening becuase the auto trans was recently reconditioned. Could it be the trans fluid? I will check my diff for looseness tommorow. It drives fine otherwise.

would love to know why it does this. I know these transmissions are also used in lexus's and are known to be very smooth transmissions.

Check the fluid type, well known that toyotas only like toyota type 4 fluid evn if dextron is spec. Check this article at http://planetsoarer.com/autotrans/autotrans.htm . Talks about shudders and clunks and the fix.

I read the article but it doesn't seem to offer any suggestions except a change of fluid (i did only skim maybe missed something)... I suppose it could be that simple. We know an auto specialist so might get him to have a look at it for a 6 pack (the corolla). The box has been reconditioned by the previous owner only 2 months ago..so if the mechanic tells me something bad I'll be taking the car back to where the trans got "recondidtioned".

The auto dude reckoned it was mainly a broken gearbox mount causing the noise.. he said fix that and see if it stops it. I'm going to post a thread to find out where I can get these types of mounts cheap.

I agree it doesn't allude to all possible causes of clunks but basically if the auto doesn't have the correct oil then it will as the clutches slip/grab trying to cope. Kind of like puting standard oil in a LSD. Makes the same sorts of noises.

EDIT: didn't see second reply re mount. This too may do.

my tranny mounts are good, no play in the shaft either.

the supra manual says to use dextron 2, my auto trans dipstick has "dextron II" written on it. Would it be a bad idea to put this toyota type IV in there?
